So Bleeding Cool ran the gossip today that Nick Spencer, current writer of Amazing Spider-Man, is expected to stay on the title until late 2021/2022. Now, the latter number is significant because it would be the 60 year anniversary of our favorite Web-Slinger. However, according to Rich, he said "much is expected of the current storyline." I'm curious what that means!

Aside from that, given the bi-weekly schedule of ASM, by the time 2022 ends, Spencer would be looking at a 100+ issue run. Given that information, what do you think is going to happen? Curious about your thoughts below!

It sounds about right. A lot of people expected Spencer would stay for a 100 issues at least but more than that no one knew.

Spencer has been quite tight-lipped in his interactions during his run on ASM (which honestly is great after Slott's interminable self-promotion) and wants his work to speak for itself.

I'd guess that they're expecting 850 and/or the upcoming Kindred reveal (not sure we'll get both at the same time) to bring in a lot of eyes/press. Which ties back into Kindred speculation in terms of how well-known Kindred's identity is a bit - a good story will stand on its own, but a big reveal will get a lot of press.

As to what will happen as he nears his 100th issue, Spencer seems to be interweaving arcs with "A-list" villains along with less well-known ones. While it's hard to predict who the less well-known characters might be (here's some bad guesses: Spidercide, Shriek, Leap-Frog, Puma), I'll be shocked if we don't get a big Doc Ock story in the second half. He's essentially a blank slate at the moment - Spencer will get to define his new status quo. Kingpin and Venom/Carnage seem to be pretty well spoken for in other books, so I'd say Lizard (seen a bit in Hunted), Vulture (ditto), and maybe Kingsley are the biggest name villains that haven't really gotten a big Spider-man story in a while, so I'd expect a Hunted-level story for at least two of Otto, Roderick, Curt or Adrian

I'd be down for this, mainly because of Boomerang's death. Blue hell I find the character insufferably annoying. Boomerang's prominence made my choice to stop reading Amazing on a regular basis far easier than it otherwise would have been.

Edit - Good for Spencer. He's done a good job so far. I have no problem with him (other than Boomerang lol) it is Editorial I'm unhappy with.

If you believe Bleeding Cool, a lot of titles are going to be expected to perform very well post-Covid.

He got his shot in Marvel Comics #1000 and later with Absolute Carnage, so he could. But he's long term on both Venom and Thor

I like your guesses! Otto coming back in a big way would be cool...I'm just hoping that if he does, they truly define a status quo and stick with it: something that is honoring the character and still meshing with what came before.

Someone on here (might have been you, I'm old and addled and can never remember) thought a kind of Dr Doom-ish role for him would be good - does villainous (or at least non-heroic) things that Peter disapproves of, but outside of Peter's jurisdiction, and they occasionally aid each other. I think that'd work better than going back to classic villain status, and is the kind of story that's definitely in Spencer's wheelhouse. Maybe he can take over some sovereign AIM island somewhere and be the mad science capital of the MU?

Nick Spencer does seem to like longer arcs, so it does seem he has at least one big one in him. I'm not sure if it's a new Big Bad, or if the Kindred arc takes a turn when he learn his/ her identity. Something big enough could very easily be a story engine going forward.

I would love all of that, honestly. That sounds fantastic! My only concern is that Superior Spider-Man #12 made it seem like he was renouncing all of his exploits and memories as "Superior." Hopefully that's not the case, but I really like your idea. I think Spencer is more than capable of telling an Ock story like yours in the same vein as "Hunted" or "True Companions" or others.

Personally I'm completely ready for a new dynamic between Peter and Otto. As long as Spencer doesn't write them like Slott/Gage did during the later point of their run, I'm good.

I'm guessing Spencer probably conceptualizes Otto differently then Slott did anyhow.

With how he wrote Kraven, Vulture, and Mysterio, I'm thinking you're right, Frontier. And I hope he brings him back during his run.
