I don't think greed was his thing. He's starving. Even though he's in a desert, there have to be other things to eat. He's spending thousands on ACME weaponry to chase a single bird like Capt. Ahab. I'm pretty sure pride is his issue. We also see this arrogance when he faces off with Bugs.
