In the instance of "Infinity Crusade" I would say that errors like this happen most when editors don't do they job and writers are over-seeing characters from a line they don't work with. Calling Jean "Marvel Woman" and Madrox "Duplicate Man" are things that should have been easily resolved before going to print since neither had ever used those names in their 20+ years of existence in the books at that point. They were trying to push out this company-wide event and didn't likely make efforts to fact-check or proof-read.

I do enjoy Scaret Witch tho...

I'm curious now. At what point did Jean STOP being Marvel Girl?

Peter Parker turned into Peter Palmer for a whole issue, then back again.
Bruce Banner became Bob Banner for several issues.

Later they decided that his name was Robert Bruce Banner.

Pretty much as soon as the Gold/Blue team era started...soon after the Morlock, MeMe, addresses her as Marvel Girl, and she replies she goes by just Jean now

She actually dropped it towards the end of X-Factor

No no. That was clearly the first evidence that there would be clones milling about.

    Case by case...
Dani as Spellbinder I would ascribe to the creators (Claremont throughout) going thru a fumbling evolution to try to find a codename that worked best for the character. She was briefly Psyche, then they tried Spellbinder in the Micronauts crossover series before settling on Mirage for years. Very Kitty Pryde of her!

Jim Starlin I think was trying to suggest a change to Marvel Woman for Jean because he thought Marvel Girl sounded silly and in the context of a huge crossover of that scale Jean Grey going by her human name just seemed un-superhero-y.

Duplicate Man was a brain fart.

I'm fine with Spellbinder being canon, but that whole mini is kind of out of canon because Marvel doesn't have the rights to Micronauts. Given what the Professor's evil side did to Dani, that's probably for the best.

Worth noting her counterpart in the Alt-Reality book MUTANT X (Madelyne Pryor actually) used the name Marvel Woman as well. Wish it would have stuck.

    Agreed.

Also, in that setting, the name "Marvel Girl" would have been diminutive to Jean among all these other powerful women who none had "girl" in their names (Polaris, Psylocke, Nova, Moondragon).
