Makes sense, he wrote a six novels fleshing out Thrawn's new Disney history and filling some of the gaps between Thrawn's appearances in Rebels. So now he has a nine year gap to work with.
If the Filoni movie features Thrawn in a prominent role Zahn would probably be the best choice to adapt it to novel form, although I don't think he's ever done a film adaptation.
