Out of all of these, Lex Luthor is my favorite.

Ares from mythology would be my favorite, but I'm actually not thrilled with DC's version of Ares.

So, totally Luthor, Catwoman and Clayface, who've had, IMO, some great interpretations over the years. Huh, all my faves are from 1940, that's unfortunate, since it puts them in competition with each other.

It's nice seeing Ultra-Humanite getting some acknowledgement

The yardstick that people are using seems to be what the character is like currently or what they were like when they were at the height of popularity, rather than what they were like when they first appeared in the comics.

Also, my obligatory note that Luthor was not called Lex until 1960. For twenty years he was just Luthor.

I just thought the "based on first appearance" was a means of sorting the options, not asking which was our favorites in their first appearance out of everyone listed.

Same here. I voted for (among others) the Ultra-Humanite but there is little to distinguish him from a ton of other villains in his first appearance and i also could die happy if i never saw an albino gorilla version again. I just think a Luthor level genuis whose brain could be in any body has great potential and that he has been used well in his later Golden Age stories , in The Golden Age Elseworlds, and in a few other places.

He was great in the recent Monkey Prince run.

Ultra-Humanite is a massive ball of potential that's rarely gotten his due, overlapping too much with Luthor. I thought they missed a big chance with the Post-Crisis revamp of Luthor to give that crazy scientist turf to UH.
