was there a reason the Infinity Gems were renamed to the Infinity Stones?
Or was it just so they can be tied to the MCU?

Yup. There was way too much chance that American cinema audiences wouldn't be able to distinguish between "gems," "gyms," and "Jims."

They were originally called Soul Gems until Starlin’s Thanos Quest.

The being/cosmos that purportedly comprised the stones still exists. They should be called the Infinity Fallacy.

Still Infinity Gems to me, soul gem is green, power gem is red etc, etc.
The movie synergy is all wrong, and Thanos was depowered, why can't he shoot cosmic beams from his hands ?.
Bad form MCU.I am a Marvel fan preferably cosmic storylines, especially Thanos or Dark Phoenix related, when both the Avengers and the X-Men are involved count me in, loved the original Uncanny Avengers series.
Not a fan of any of the new characters.
(Marvel/DC fan for 44+ years)
