I view cops the same way I view priests.

    Are there good ones?

    Yes, for sure.

Do they keep the bad ones in check?

    No, absolutely THEY DO NOT.

They are almost always aware something is up with the bad ones but (at best) lack the clout and/or courage to effectively confront them, or (at worst) actively cover for them out of loyalty to the profession over victims.

And the only cop shows I ever watched were RENO 911 and BROOKLYN 99.

The latter threw out all their upcoming season 8 scripts after the George Floyd murder happened, and are starting over from scratch. Word is that this may be the final season and they'll explore what "defunding the police" would actually entail.

Brooklyn 99 season 8 is shaping up to be some preachy non comedy that wont be worth watching.

Looking back now, I don't find the old shows like Dragnet or Adam 12 annoying though I do find them laughably unrealistic. I don't mind shows that slant the situation to the view of the main characters like the Dirty Harry movies where liberal judges are portrayed as naive people who think ruthless killers are victims and cops are evil for breaking some two-bit rules to stop them.

What I find irritating today is stuff like the first few seasons of the original Law & Order. There were episodes where it was almost like racism is on the verge of not existing anymore and where the main heroes of the story tell black people, "If you want to know where most of the racism is coming from today, look in the mirror".

Not to say there was not black racism against other races but to say most racism is coming mostly from black people, which was a very popular white opinion in the 1990s (and still is among many people) is, at best, hopelessly naive.

Vic was left with nothing and no one. I'd hardly call that a victory.
I read somewhere some cops actually did admire Vic so the ending was supposed to be some kind of middle finger to them.

I suspect it was for the sake of all of Vic's fans, cops or otherwise. My Dad still defends him, so they might have been too subtle, lol

I will say that current events did affect my viewing of the second season of "L.A.'s Finest." It's a mediocre show filled with a bunch of "heroic rebel cop" tropes, and while it was obviously filmed before all this, seeing the heroes back each other up to cover up a shooting (the person was of course evil), where even the I.A. investigator lets the hero cop off the hook because of the "greater good" just didn't sit right.

The problem I always had with how stuff like Internal Affairs is portrayed is that the cops always act like civilians do in non-cop shows. It shows just how self-centered the characters' perspectives are.

It gave me such an appreciation for Sharon Raydor who was never portrayed as mustache-twirlingly evil and really was just doing her job.

I think the reason why I’m “ok” with the brutality is that it’s something that comes with being a main character regardless of what their job actually is.

“The protagonists are always right, and anyone who slows them down is wrong.”

After hearing all the shady stuff the Chicago PD does it sort of ruins Mike and Molly for me.

    OP Question -

No, because I don't watch modern cop shows. I've never liked Law & Order, for example, with its hothead police who, frankly, abuse suspects and game the system whenever possible. The fact they are typically presented as the "good guys" no matter how legally and morally questionable their actions trouble me a great deal. Another aspect of these CSI-style shows that also troubles me is the unblinking glorification of extreme violence (both sexual and physical) to semi-pornographic portions. I do not need images of out of control police and horrendous crimes ingrained in my psyche when the world is in such a terrible state, thank you very much.

Are you talking about the show or the real police when you talk about CPD?

    Not at all.

I'm half hispanic. The extreme majority of the time I dealt with Police (Never been arrested, but I miiight have more speeding tickets than birthdays) have been courteous and professional. I also met many officers (and soon to be) at college and some cook outs.

Yeah, the Police aren't getting the best light in the media (its good seeing the bad ones exposed) but I'm more than convinced the good outweigh the bad.

I legit can't watch movies about rogue cops who break all the rules to bring in the bad guy any more. As is too often the case, the logic fictional characters like Dirty Harry and Mel Gibson's character in Lethal Weapon use to work around the system is probably the exact same logic real life cops use to choke a man out for selling cigarettes.
Keep in mind that you have about as much chance of changing my mind as I do of changing yours.

It's the kind of thing you appreciate as kid but find toxic as an adult.

Anti-heroes and "people who do what's necessary" annoy me for similar reasons.

I can get behind an anti-hero as long as they're portrayed as such (i.e. Punisher on the Netflix Daredevil show), but I do find it less palatable to revel in the "renegade cop" as much when they're being casually glorified for eschewing the law and the plot bends to that portrayal.

We're in a situation right now where every abuse by any cop anywhere in the country gets plastered all over social media. That generates a feeling that cops are all bad. Some of the stuff that gets on Social Media, the videos, often don't have any context to know how it started or what was happening. It's just assumed cop = evil.

My nephew was a cop and angrily declares that this whole thing is a crock based on a few legitimate instances that are all over the media but, as he puts it, in the overwhelming majority of these situations, the people the cops are facing are murderers that would kill them without hesitation and hesitating because of what some armchair critics will say on social media will only get them killed.
