Yeah the earring thing seems more just typical parent type stuff then trying to imply that Sue hates gay people. Earrings being used to signal to gay people is true though, even though it's really pretty outdated.
Wait are people actually seriously trying to call Sue homophobic because her teenage son went and got an ear piercing without telling her?
Yes, I predicted this answer. As you said, in general. I wonder if "all the mutants" that Franklin refers to, all come from the United States or are of that sexuality and expression
But, that's not the actual issue, is it? The issue of Sue's reaction Franklin's sexuality was brought up not for its own sake but merely as a tool to bring down her character. Which continued from a four-issue mini-series.

Sue being homophobic is a stretch longer than her husband.
"Cable was right!"
I mean my mom wouldn’t have been thrilled if I got my ears pierced without asking, that total means she was straight-teen-girl-trying-to-look-older-phobic. . And I don’t really know if the one earring thing is even still thing (as whole) with teenagers in this century, lol.
The one earring thing definitely isn't modern code, since coding like that isn't really as necessary as it'd have been back when it was common. Its definitely likely written more as a general teenage rebellious thing than as him being gay, and definitely not meant to be "Sue is homophobic". If it's intentional coding it's buried under like 8 layers of obscurity.
I blame the stupid recent FF/X-Men mini for creating unnecessary drama.

Sue abandoned Tong and the rest of the Future Foundation kids
She's so over protective of Franklin and Val, her biological kids, but she let the rest of them just run off into the multiverse.
I guess we know where her priorities lay
