    Default John Maclaine gets replaced

The plot gods have given John Maclaine time off and sent him to couples thereby with Holly followed by an extended romantic vacation. To fill in for him in the movies they've brought on another honest, skilled and extremely competent cop in the form of Benton Fraser RCMP. So how do the assorted thieves in the movies do while dealing with policing like they do it in the Great White North as is so ably demonstrated by our earnest and always polite hero? For the sake of the scenario Bentoncan use guns freely even though he's out of his jurisdiction.

He embarrasses a lot of people when defeating them. Or shames them into giving up. Or comes up with extremely improbable plans to disable their own plans that somehow manage to work out through a combination of Canadian pluck and sheer, bull-headed refusal to believe he will fail. Or occasionally just beats them up. Etc.

It helps if original Ray is with him.
    Why are we here?

I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

Ah, Benton Fraser, the best written Clark Kent we ever got on TV.
