I think that is a gross mischaracterization of that game.

That circus catch from Kearse goes INC and Brady's comeback drive is the play of the game.

Butler reads the other direction and Russell gets the comeback of a lifetime.

I think it is time to call that game what it really was.

A top to bottom show case of what makes football great.

Stellar D on from both teams.

Amazing once- in- a lifetime plays on both sides.

    Stellar offensive on both sides.

    Lead changes.

    Comeback win.

A young gun proving he is here to stay.

A veteran doing what he does best.

An unsung hero saving the day.

    It had it all.

I agree with the Rams game, though. Both of them. Those were 90% defense and 10% Brady putting them in a position to win.

Montana didn't have a super star cast of offensive weapons til the final 2 Super Bowls. This was Joe Montana's WR/TE/RB on his 1st 2 championships.

    1981 season :

    RBs

-Paul Hofer (retired due to injuries after 1st Super Bowl in 1981)
    - Johnny Davis (Was let go after 1981 season and 1 Super Bowl. Was career backup RB)
    - Ricky Patton (Another career backup RB who was around that 1981 season)

    WR's

    - Dwight Clark (Clark had a career year in 1981 with 1,105 yards receiving. He was perhaps the best weapon Montana had from 1980-1984. But had only 1 , 1,000+ yard season)
    - Freddie Solomon (career backup in Miami , played 8 seasons with 49ers and best season was 1981. Was up/down the rest of his 49ers run)
    - Mike Wilson (Career backup. Interestingly he played from 1981 to 1990 with 49ers. Finishing his entire career there. His best season was the strike year of 1987)

    TE

Charlie Young (Had early success in 1970s with Eagles. Had a decent 1981 season but was gone after 1982.

    1984 season :

    RBs

    Wendell Tyler *
    Roger Craig *

Both RB's were big producers for Montana with Craig in 49ers Hall of Fame given his greatness. You can say both were Montana's biggest weapons in 1984 as both men accounted for over 2,700+ yards from scrimmage that year. (rushing and receiving combined)

    WR's

    Dwight Clark
    Freddie Solomon
    Mike Wilson

    TE's

Russ Francis (The Former Patriots great TE had retired after 1980 but after speaking to Walsh came outta retirement to play a year later. Was part 1 Super Bowl)
Earl Cooper (was moved from FB to TE in 1984 , had only 3 receptions !)
John Frank (Career backup TE , became a bit of a starter in 1987 strike season)

But this was Montana's offensive team around him in those 2 Super Bowls. Tyler and Craig was pretty much the biggest stars next to Clark who slowly faded in offense and was replaced by Rice.

That’s just offensive skill players. Ronnie Lott was one of the scariest secondary players in the game the entire time Montana was there. Fred Dean (also HOF) and Dwight Hicks were studs as well. Then Eric Wright was another All Pro caliber CB. So you had 3 All Pro level guys in the secondary and a HOF’er on the line. Randy Cross was one of the best RG’s if not the best RG in the game at that time. Keith Falhenhorst was a 3 time All Pro tackle. John Ayers was an All Pro Guard, In 1984 they had 10 Pro Bowlers on the team.

So they were stacked on the offensive line with 3 All Pros. They had Roger Craig who is probably the best RB not in the HOF. They had 3 All Pros in the secondary including Ronnie Lott who is arguably the GOAT to play his position. And a HOF defensive end on the d-line. Thats a stacked team. Also in those early days they had the Walsh WCO which took the league by storm at the time and nobody knew how to defend it.

That’s pre 1985, and they were still loaded. Then they only added a guy named Jerry Rice in 1985 who was the GOAT WR and two years after that a John Taylor. Oh and then in 1986 they added Charles Haley who is one of the greatest defensive ends of all time and has the second most SB’s outside Brady. So they somehow replaced one HOF DE with an even better one.

A team like that is not existing in the modern NFL.

Montana’s defense alone held his opponents to 16, 16, and 10 in the last SB. The only time Brady in his 9 SB’s had his defense hold a team to 16 or less was in his last one. The year before they Brady’s defense gave up 41 points. Montana never had a defense give up 26 in a SB. The 49’ers defensive points per game in Montana’s SB’s was 17 PPG. For Brady it was 22 PPG. Montana’s defense once held Elway to a 19.4 passer rating in a Super Bowl and got him benched for Kubiak. In 1984 Marino had arguably the GOAT QB season ever to the point where his stats from that season still compare with modern players. Montana’s defense held him to a 66.9 passer rating and a 1-2 TD:INT ratio. In that same game Montana’s kicker broke the record for most field goals on a SB with 5. He also made 5 extra points. So the kicker got them 20 points in a game they only needed 18 to win. Montana also had great game that day, but realistically they were just humiliating the Dolphins all around, he did not have a hard job. Those are two HOF QB’s and that’s what his defense did to them.

Not Seattle. Brady tied the comeback record in a SB against Seattle, had one of the best statistical 4th quarters ever in a SB, and had 4 TD’s to 4 different receivers (Gronk, Edelman, Amendola, Lafell). The defense almost blew the game with a freak catch the same way they blew the first half lead with 30 seconds to go earlier in the game.

Everyone knows that the 49ers defense built by Walsh through the drafts and trades (Fred Dean etc) was a HUGE factor in their winning a lot of games. No lying even I admit that the defense carried the team through a big number of games. They still needed Montana to make the offense work enough to do it. With a lot of spare parts at times In fact a number of games were really close in 1981 season.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1981_S...o_49ers_season

In that 1981 season Montana had 2 game winning drives . He also had the famous Cowboys game winning drive as we know in NFC Championship. There likely wouldn't be a 49ers dynasty without that greatness there.

No one should discount that defense that Walsh built for sure. But the offense from 1980-1984 wasn't the big offense we all remember. It didn't have all those stars and Montana kept it moving enough,

No defense from the Eagles today. They are being pushed around by the Rams.

That goes without saying. Meanwhile, the offense hasn’t exactly been gangbusters so far.

This Colts game against the Vikings has been absolutely dreadful.

Hilton drops a potential touchdown (a problem he had at the end of last week's game), and it's been all field goals. Meanwhile, Minnesota's offense has been absolutely nonexistent this week after their shootout with Green Bay.

    Yes.

Meanwhile, I heard the 49ers have lost Jimmy G, Raheem Mostert, Nick Bosa, and Solomon Thomas to injuries already today, and none will return to this game. The latter two were carted off, which does not bode well for their long term prospects, or San Francisco repeating as NFC West champs.

Before the injury Barkley seemed to be having a better game than last week behind that miserable line. He had averaged 7 yards a carry and then he goes down with that. But after his injury that offensive line shows just how **** it is. Lewis has 20 yards on 10 carries. I feel for Daniel Jones. He's a 2nd year QB behind a line that really can't run so he's forced into passing and taking hits.

Rothlisberger seems to be holding off the Bradshaw comparisons big time. He showed how good he can still rip the ball from a nice scramble and throw for a TD. Just a nice throw and its amazing how far medically things have went. That same elbow surgery ended Bradshaw's career if anyone doesn't remember. Big Ben however is throwing 30+ yard TD strikes with ease.

I wonder if this will be Matt Patricia's last game as Lions coach. Its clear the team just fucking quits at times and its getting worse. I watched a call in radio sports host roast the **** outta him.

None of that mattered because the Pat's D stop Seattle with a first and goal. They score, none of what Brady did would win the game.
Same with the Atlanta game, the D doesn't sack Ryan when they had an easy FG to win, there is no OT, no SB win.
The point of this was how close many of Brady's SB wins where. I was saying like the Giants loses were one big play and he could be 8-1, he could also be 4-5 if not for some big D plays.
He deserves credit for his unmatched record, but what ifs go both ways.

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Josh is tearing up the Dolphins. 400+ passing yards and 4 TDs so far.

Arizona is handling the WFT in a sloppy game, up 14-0. Washington's offense has been less than inspiring, and they have 2 fumbles already. Arizona has like 6 penalties already, so they're not exactly hitting on all cylinders, but it doesn't look like Washington has an answer for Kyler Murray or DeAndre Hopkins. If Arizona goes up by 3 scores... well, the WFT pass rush isn't going to get the opportunities they want to win the game. They're not good against the run, and the second half could feature a LOT of Kenyan Drake.

If Arizona pulls this one out, they're on top of the NFC West, tied with the Rams and Seahawks. The 49ers will be 2 back of every division foe, and leveled with injuries.

Meanwhile, after Dallas pulled a miracle comeback against Atlanta, the NFC Least is back. They'll be tied with WFT and the Giants and Eagles each a game back.
