Default Should the Rogues be metahumans in a Flash movie?

If the Rogues were to be introduced in a Flash movie should they be based on their classic appearances being regular guys with technology or the New 52 and having super powers? Personally I'd love to see metahuman Rogues on the big screen. This may the unpopular but them having power just made them look more visually interesting with way more creative fights. Plus it could be a nice way of separating itself from the CW series where besides Wizard they are all normal people

Depends on the character. Captain Cold should certainly be normal - if he's a metahuman he becomes a Mister Freeze clone. Mirror Master should probably be a meta though.

I prefer them to remain normal crooks with tech. Makes them a bit more unique in DC. The only other tech crooks are over in MCU with Iron Man and Spider-Man. It's all people with powers. Flash fighting these kinds of unpowered guys with gadgets gives it something more unique.

Especially considering how overused the metas are in the CW series.

I always feel the Rogues are suppose to be a group of crooks with gadget. It's what make them feels like they are villains from silver age and one of the most unique group in DC Universe.

Except Mr Freeze isn't a meta.

He must be, as he sure ain't a normal human. He can't survive without a containment suit due to alterations to his body chemistry.

I prefer them having powers because it's less of a case of the Flash punching down. Their tech based niche would be better against Green Arrow to me.

Granted the rogues with powers is more likely to turn into a slugfest. So if it could be written more like Jojo's bizarre adventure than DBZ that would be great.

That makes him more comparable to a person with a disease than a meta.

I think The Rogues are more unique and true to form as blue-collar crooks with gadget gimmicks who band together against The Flash rather than a bunch of superpowered Supervillains.

Agreed. It's just more true to the themes of the characters. These guys don't view themselves as divinely gifted, or invulnerable, or freaks, or any of the tropes that come with getting powers. They're crooks who use their smarts to rob with ruthless effectiveness, and their tools help them do that.

We've seen plenty of metahumans/mutatnts control the weather, get fire/freeze powers, it just wouldn't be as special.

I would be open to someone like The Top having abilities, or Weather Wizard being the one who can control the wand, but the core of the group should be tech-dependent.

    My sentiments exactly.

It bugged me when the Rogues started showing up on THE FLASH T.V. series as metahumans. I wanted the gadgets and gimmicks. But the meta thing became a whole theme on the show, so it was swimming against the tide to argue against it.

There are exceptions, of course, but I think of your typical Rogue as a loser crook who stumbles upon a cool gadget and his first thought is--I wonder if I can use this against the Flash?

It's not punching down, because the Flash never asked for this. They started it--and usually they've discovered some gimmick that he's never had to deal with before--so they get the jump on him and he's stymied. He has to go back to base and strategize a new use for his powers to counter this device.

Each new encounter, we get an original application of the powers. Result: entertainment. The Rogues are put on ice and they don't come back until they've figured out yet another way to use their gimmick that Flash has never prepared for. And so it's a reciprocal relationship--where each is making the other better at his job.

I'd be tempted to say 'mix of both,' because some of them, like Weather Wizard, don't make as much sense to be gadget based. (I can suspend disbelief for a cold gun, but a wand that creates storms? That's not big enough to hold a D battery? No.)

That said, some are so, so much less versatile as metas. Mirror Master does all sorts of crazy stuff in the comics. On the TV show, he's a meta who jumps in and out of mirrors. So, so dull, by comparison. I feel like he's so much less of a cool character, no matter how absurd some of the comic book gadgets can get.

Plus I also like the idea of the Flash, and his Rogues, being *smart.* Not just mutants, but actual scientists and techies (no matter how far awry they've gone). No need for freak accidents or 'born this way' origin stories, they are, for the most part, self-made folk.

And there's always the exceptions, like Gorilla Grodd, who is very much not 'a dude with a gimmick' for that meta flavor, so it's not like having the Rogues stick to tech means that Flash isn't going to face people with actual powers (like all those other speedsters...) from time to time.

    Hell no.

The whole idea is that they're normal human beings who can take down the Flash with their gadgets.

I think only weather wizard should be a meta human. The wand thing isn't as believable as the others. I know Kadabra uses a wand but that wand is 30th century tech so its whatever.

I think no, and I think I have a good reason why beyond just "They're classic" and "Flash has two "tiers" of villains, classic, and kind of anti-Flash meta".

Barry Allen is a CSI. Each of the Vintage Rogues basically has a special gun or special wand or special item that allows them to carry off their crime gimmick, which usually involves robbery of some kind. Upon occasion you might have one be a very strange murder weapon of course, as in a film it's likely that the Rogues' no kill "general rule" might not be applied strongly. And Boomerang is a scumbag. And Cold does settle personal grudges.

To the degree where like ... Barry deals with specialized crime scenes and unimaginable murder weapons or arson tools or robbery plots, Barry might even have more experience in the field than Batman. Obviously Batman handles a lot of similar stuff and they overlap heavily, but only started handling Silver Age ultra-tech at the same time Barry came around, so prior to that it was mostly bullets and fingerprints and the occasional monstro-giant hair follicles and frankly mostly death traps and puzzles. All that is just to say that Barry has his area of expertise ... and the Rogues having sci-fi weapons and costumes they commit crimes with actually builds on that core element of The Flash in a way that's more organic and slick than just the fact that he also has an obvious and tropey horde of Counter-Speed Dark Anti-Flashes out there.

The Rogues and their modus operandi are the very thing, their crime scenes specifically, that force The Fastest Man Alive to kind of slow down and examine things and figure it all out. Then of course he's able to race off to wherever he has deduced they're hiding out and thwart them before their next big robbery.
