I’m really slowing down these past few days. I think partly because I started doing this in September and partly because I’m just old and trash.

    And speaking of old:

    29. The Body Snatcher (1945)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Body_Snatcher_(film)
I watched it on Blu-ray, but it’s airing on TCM soon

This has really become one of my favorite old horror movies, much to my own surprise. It’s a little tough to recommend, because it’s very quiet and slow (like all the Robert Wise movies I’ve seen, actually). But the story and dialogue are great, the creepy atmosphere is on-point, and it’s my favorite Boris Karloff performance.

I've been watching Haven on Netflix and like Jared Padalecki in Friday the 13th Eric Balfour in this movie sort of took me out of it. Its no fault to the movie as it is a good remake and I think this was one of the last movies that the late great R. Lee Ermey was in. Do known actors in TV series take away from anyone else's movie experiences?

There are double bit hatchets just they commonly have a hammerhead on them. The difference between an Ax, a hand Ax, and a hatchet is the size of the handle and not the type bit they have.

Yeah, that's actually one of the reasons I never watched it prior to having internet access, not having seen pics, or recalling previews, I was under the impression, based on the title, the creature had a pumpkin head and thought it was a ridiculous concept. It wasn't until I watched it with friends after the 2000 DVD release that I realized what was up, and then it was "that's a cool Alien hybrid design" but it had only a superficial connection to the pumpkin of the title. Over the years it's become way less of an issue and appreciate what the film manages to accomplish on a budget of only 3.5 mil.

I watched it in the early 90, was on The Movie Channel or something like that at night. It quickly became one of my favorites (I'm watching it tonight). I've never seen any of the sequels. Not sure if I want to as the first was such a surprise that I didn't want it take away for it like so many sequels have in the past.

Voodoo Man! Another Bela Lugosi B movie. Interesting facts - film was shot in seven days, using single takes, and has similarities to the Val Lewton classic "I Walked with a Zombie," the Tobe Hooper classic "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and Kevin MacDonald's biographical movie about Bob Marley. If that doesn't make you want to go see the movie right now, well, I don't really blame you.

I'd recommend staying the the course, I've seen two sequels and they're nowhere near the quality of the first.

    October 29th. 60 - We Summon The Darkness (2019).

Set in the 80s, metal heads are seemingly being killed by a Satanic cult. The movie doesn't quite work, as it's not sure if it wants to be more Green Room or The Babysitter.

    73. Mandy (2018) Slowly and methodically builds up an air of unsettling menace though image and sound during the first half, then sends the character of Red (played by Nicolas Cage) on a blood soaked mission of vengance against a cult responsible for his wife's murder. Cage gives one of the best performances of his career, and it helps that he has very little dialog.

    74. It Follows (2014) A young woman is pursued by a supernatural entity after having it passed to her through a sexual encounter, unseen by others, it is able to appear as anyone, family, friend or stranger, and can only be thwarted by passing it on to someone else. Often seen as an allegory of the AIDS/ HIV crisis, and STDs in general.

    75. Night Of The Demons (1988) During a Halloween party at an abandoned morgue built atop an indian burial mound, a group of high school kids unwittingly release a demonic entity which possesses some amd murders the rest. Will anyone survive 'til daybreak? Low budget affair with effects to match, though still entertaining despite its shortcomings and has developed a cult following over the years.

    76. The Void (2016) from Wkipedia: "The plot follows a small group of people who become trapped in a hospital by a gathering of hooded cultists, and by grotesque creatures." Loaded with Lovecraftian themes, it's unfortunately sometimes hard to ignore the other films it borrows its ideas from.

    October 30th. 61 - Gantz: 0 (2016). 62 - Brave New Jersey (2017). 63 - The Night Before Halloween (2016). 64 - Jason X (2001).

CG animated movie. Japanese cities are periodically suffering from hordes of rampaging demonic monsters of varying shapes and size. Recently deceased civilians are conscripted by an unknown agency to fight them with futuristic weapons and videogame-like rules. That's about all the explanation you get. Some of the monsters were pretty cool, and there's a premise that warrants exploration, but the movie hardly even hints at anything beyond what you learn in the first ten minutes.

This turned out to be a comedic drama. It's a October 30, 1939, night of the famous "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast. In a rural New Jersey town, various residents think Martians are invading for real and it has a profound impact on their lives. It wasn't as seasonally themed as I'd hoped. But having grown up in Jersey, I find stories about thr incident worth checking out.

    https://media-cache.cinematerial.com...g?v=1589406627

Others have covered this. Basically Syfy mixing the "prank gone wrong" slasher premise with an It Follow/The Ring like curse that has to be passed on. I was not impressed.
Maybe if most of the movie had been teens conniving to screw each other over in a dark comedy I would have liked it.

Besides hunting down newly discovered relatives, the other big trend for 90s slasher villains was going into SPAAAAACE. This movie knows its done, its just very pedestrian in execution. Still a fun entry in a long series that never strives for high art or anything close to it. It's a real shame they don't do more with the Cyber Jason upgrade. He should have gotten that much earlier in the movie.

Continuing the B for Bela Lugosi theme. . .

The Corpse Vanishes - Man makes brides disappear with orchids!

Phantom Creeps - Vibranium first discovered. Inspiration for Black Panther! Racism, though, quite unfortunate.

30a. Tales From the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (1995)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon_Knight
    AMC

I saw the second Crypt film, Bordello of Blood, years ago on TV and thought it was dumb. So I avoided Demon Knight till now, and I’m surprised by bow much I liked it! I actually regret that I watched it edited on TV; seeing Billy Zane punch his fist through a guy’s face and then rip his head off while withdrawing his hand deserved to be seen uncut.

    30b. Tales of Halloween (2015)
    Shudder
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_Halloween

I’ve heard a lot of good things said about this anthology over the years, but I’m afraid I just don’t see it. None of the segments were especially bad, but a few felt a little pointless, and the best ones were just okay. Very few of the twists or little morality lessons I’m used to from horror anthology.

30c. Island of Lost Souls (1932)

    TCM

A classic of pre-Code horror, with a great performance by Charles Laughton; if maybe not quite as fun to rewatch as the Universal movies of the same era.

    77. Hellraiser (1987) I always think this was made in the early, rather than late, 80s, same with Hellraiser II, both have this look and feel of having been made earlier. Anyway, the first in the franchise, and arguably the best, it was also horror author Clive Barker's directorial debut, which introduced the world to Pinhead, though the character was simply referred to as "Lead Cenobite" and didn't receive the official moniker until the sequel.
