Häxan (1922) from the Wikipedia page: Häxan (Danish title: Heksen; English title: The Witches or Witchcraft Through the Ages) is a 1922 Swedish-Danish documentary-style silent horror film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Based partly on Christensen's study of the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, Häxan is a study of how superstition and the misunderstanding of diseases and mental illness could lead to the hysteria of the witch-hunts. The film was made as a documentary but contains dramatised sequences that are comparable to horror films.

I have honestly Been Really Impresses & Suprised with how good both Invisible Man movies have been. They are funny and clever in all the right ways and the lead actors that have been the Invisible Man have been perfect for the roles. This one was more of a Good man trying not to go bad but becoming the Invisible Man to prove his innocents with a good hearwarming ending to it!

October 18th. 34 - The Last Man on Earth (1964). 35 - Vampires vs The Bronx (2020)




I watched the colorized version on Amazon Prime (US).
First adaptation of "I Am Legend", which I haven't read. I haven't seen the Will Smith movie, either. I did see The Omega Man once on TV when was a kid. Well, I saw most of it, but we had to go somewhere and so my mom told me how it ended, and I haven't come across it since.

Vincent Price is good, I can't say much for the rest of the cast, apparently none of them spoke English. The movie is at its best when it's Price alone. I know what the book's ending is and this movie tries for a variation of it that doesn't work at all.

It's interesting to see just how much this a vampire film. They're called that name, they're repulsed by mirrors and garlic, Price goes around staking them by day. Yet, they're functionally more like zombies and one can see how this was a big influence on George Romero. These vamps, despite having enough intelligence to speak are actually total pushovers. Price even says they're only dangerous in large numbers, and he proves it.





Vampires vs The Bronx is perfectly fine example of a movie that's been done before. It looks good, it's mostly well acted, but it could have been written over the course of a weekend. There isn't one single thing the movie does with characters or story that is surprising. OK, there is one small surprise with a minor character who doesn't need much convincing to believe in vampires, which is explained with a fun line but there isn't much follow up on it.

If the kids are gonna base their vampire research on Blade, then they should react when their vamps don't follow Blade rules and are actually much more traditional.

We finally get to Jason with the mask, and honestly, that really does seem to make a difference. Even though I think the second movie is still technically better than this one.

I avoided this movie for a long time because I just didnÂ’t see how it could be interesting. When I finally watched it, I thought it was very good, if a little slow. Watching it again today, I liked it even more. I think I may continue on with the sequels this time, even while expecting the usual decrease in quality.

Now that I've watched all of the Michael Myers Halloween (I skipped Halloween 3, I'm just not a fan and I was trying for all of the Michael Myers movies) I can rank which one is my favorite and lest favorite. For the number one slot I'd have to go with the original Halloween (1978). It's introduction to Michael as nothing but evil with no other real motivation works, and Laurie Strode creates the trope for the "final girl" one that will stay in horror movies for decades. A runner up would be Halloween II (1981) as a continuance imminently after the first it does miss the Carpenter directing but set up the lore that will make all of the other movies to follow (except Halloween 2018)

For the lest I'd have to go with Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers. This one should have been called the cult of Myers and takes away from the "pure evil" man that made the first one so good it make it a supernatural cult just was not a fan at all. The runner up for least favorite was a tie between Zombie's Halloween II (2009) and Halloween: Resurrection. I like Zombie's first Halloween movie it opened up more on the evil mind of Michael, I hated when Danny Trejo was killed in it and that showed just how evil he Myers is. It also showed how obsessed Loomis was with Michael. His second movie how ever was a mess that seemed to be written around his wife rather than a Halloween movie. Resurrection was just bad.

Asylum - This one movie freaked me out so badly when I was a kid. Its by Amicus, which was making movies about the same time as Hammer, but they had more of a serious bent to them and less sensuality. Asylum is an anthology with a framing story - it takes place in a hospital for the mentally incurable, with all the patients relaying their stories to a new doctor. For the time, the effects were great and genuinely creepy. Nothing scared me about it this time through though.

Night of the Demons - An 80's horror movie that has become a cult classic mostly due to one particularly bizarro scene. The film is very Evil Dead in feel, just due to the demon possession aspect but it does add some clever elements of its own.

Definitely agree with the original being the top of the list, and I feel the same about Curse and Resurrection, awful movies and I've never even considered adding them to my collection, the handful of times I've seen them either on tv or at a friend's house have been more than enough for me. As for Rob Zombie's second Halloween, I'm not sure where I put it, there are things I like about it, but all the nonsense about the ghost of Debra Myers and child Micheal being responsible for his murderous impulses, along with the white horse iconography, really drag the film down, just comes off as half baked psuedo-intellectualism, and Rob just doesn't have the ability to pull it off convincingly. There was definitely the potential for a good Halloween movie in there, somewhere...

Anyway...

45. The Witching (1972) Also known as Necromancy, featuring Orson Welles phoning it in as an enigmatic cult leader in a small California town who attempts to harness the powers of a local woman (Lori, played by Pamela Franklin) to resurrect his dead son. There are a few versions, the original, a censored tv version, and a recut version for the home video market released in 1983, which is available on Youtube and is the one I watched. For the most part it's fairly tame and a bit of a slog even at 76 minutes, but the dream/premonition sequences are pretty decent for the time they were made, especially the bit where Lori sees herself rising up from an open casket, and there are some scenes which make good use of light and shadow to create a creepy atmosphere.

October 19th. 36 - Werewolf of London (1935)




While watching this, I was struck by how much Joe Johnston's Wolfman remake from a decade ago took from it as well as the more famous Lon Chaney movie.

For a while during it, I wondered why The Wolfman became iconic and this didn't. Ithink it had to be a combination of the werewolf makeup looking more subdued and the main character not being very sympathetic.

46. Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979) Werner Herzog's remake of F. W. Murnau's 1922 German Dracula adaptation Nosferatu, starring Klaus Kinski as a somewhat more sympathetic iteration of the undead Count.

47. Suspiria (1977) I know quite a few people who list this as one of their all time favorite movies, and as much as I respect their views, and the status the film holds, it's never really clicked with me beyond appreciation of the cinematography and the bold stylistic use of lighting and color. It may be blasphemy to those fans who consider Suspiria Dario Argento's greatest masterpiece, but I much prefer the 2018 version, and just find it more engaging and menacing than the original. I really think it's the obvious dubbing of English dialog that tends to continually pull me out of the movie which keeps me from enjoying it outside of its visual treatments.

Decided to knock out the whole Tommy Jarvis trilogy tonight. 4 and 5 were completely new to me, 6 I’d seen pieces of on TV before. And honestly, seeing it uncut didn’t make a whole ton of difference; the amount of off-screen kills in 5 and 6 compared to the earlier entries in the series is startling.

4 is probably the best of this lot, though Crispin Glover’s band of expendables is the most forgettable yet. (Also, I don’t know if it was a problem with my TV settings or what, but some scenes were so goddamn dark I couldn’t make out what was happening)

I think I prefer 6, which is stupid but knows it, and so is able to have a lot more fun as a result. 5 is by far the worst of the series to this point. Not because of the lack of Jason, but because of the lack of one likable or believable character in the whole movie.

X: the Man with the X-ray Eyes. Directed by Roger Corman and starring Ray Milland as the doctor who experiments on his vision. I'll not lie, most of the movie was fairly mundane with a scifi bent to it but, as the story progresses, things get more and more odd in a subtle way. And then right at the end ... BOOM! its pure Lovecraft. And I mean, El Creepo, paranoia Lovecraft of the most delicious variety. Apparently Corman had just directed a Lovecraft-based movie just before this one, and it influenced him. Worth a see.
