    48. The Exorcist (1973) What can I saw about this fim that hasn't already been said multiple times over nearly half a century, a classic of the horror genre which easily stands the test of time.

    49. The Exorcist III (1990) Underrated second sequel (best to skip Exorcist II: The Heretic anyway) to the 1973 original. For me, this film has an air of creeping dread that I absolutely love, the pacing, camera work, lighting and sound all work to maintain that atmosphere through most of the run time. Actually, sound is very important in this movie and the original, both use music very sparingly, in The Exorcist it's almost always during transitions, while dialog and naturally occuring sounds/sound effects/foley work define the main body of most scenes. The Exorcist III takes a similar approach, and also makes use of simple, sustained ambient passages, choir, chant and low growling noises to accentuate the feeling of unease. Two more manditory Halloween season favorites.

A decent low budget haunted house movie. Another one where I think making it a bit of a period piece helps with the budget. Minimal special effects, so they're pretty good when they're on. I would watch it again, some day down the line.

This production has one of those great Roger Corman stories. He was finishing up another movie, The Young Racers, in Ireland, and had about $20K left over from that movie's $160K budget. So he gave it Racers' 2nd Unit director, and told him to stay in Ireland with the cast and shoot a quickie Psycho ripoff. And that's what the director, Francis Ford Coppola, did.

It's enjoyable enough for what it is; the work of a first-time director and the fiddling of a producer who wanted it to be something else. It's in the public domain, and in fact, there's an embedded video of the full film on the Wikipedia page.

A classic by any means of the word and one I prefer so much more than the remake. I watched the colorized Amazon Prime and would say I like it so much better in black and white. Price is quite possibly the immortal king of horror .

Any one that goes into an Adam Sandler movie looking for intellectual stimulation and thought provoking dialogue has most likely never seen an Adam Sandler movie. This was a fun movie (and cast) with horror tropes and call backs to other Sandler movies.

    24. Annabelle In Santa Monica, California, John Form, a doctor, presents his expectant wife Mia with a rare vintage porcelain doll as a gift for their first child to be placed in a collection of dolls in their daughter's nursery.

That night, the couple is disturbed by the sounds of their next door neighbors, the Higgins, being murdered during a home invasion. While Mia calls the police, she and John are attacked by the Higgins' killers. The police arrive and shoot one killer, a man, dead while the female killer commits suicide by slitting her throat inside the nursery while holding the doll. News reports identify the assailants as the Higgins' estranged daughter, Annabelle, and her unidentified boyfriend, both members of a cult.

In the days following the attack, a series of paranormal activities occurs around the Forms' residence. Afterwards, Mia gives birth to a healthy baby girl. She and John name their child Leah. The family rents an apartment in Pasadena and, after finding the doll that John had discarded since Annabelle's previous attack in one of their boxes, another set of paranormal events plagues Mia and her daughter. The next night Mia is haunted by a malevolent presence in her apartment. She believes it to be Annabelle's ghost after she encounters an enigmatic figure in the building's basement, who begins pursuing her .

Day of the Triffids (1962). Loved the book, always wanted to see this movie but was a little hesitant because the book was pretty interesting and the movie looked a bit lame. Well, movie, you had one job and you blew it! It really butchers the book in all the worst ways. The lighthouse stuff makes no sense whatsoever. I mean, you take the book's main character, stick him alone and isolated in a lighthouse to figure out all the secrets of the triffids, where it can't possibly matter tha he knows anything?! The movie's main character, meanwhile, gets into a safe house which then gets invaded by escaped convicts - offscreen?! Thats the most exciting thing to happen in the whole movie and it happens off screen. The triffids look stupid and unmenacing even by 1962 standards. The actors do ok with what they have but its really hammy. The print looked terrible. For some reason the movie only showed on a part of my TV screen and looked super grainy and blah. Not worth seeing, don't do it! I wouldn't even use a copy of this movie as a drink coaster, it would bring up too many traumatic memories. Die movie, die!

    October 20th. 37 - 13 Ghosts (2001). 38 - The Beast With Five Fingers (1946). 39 - The Devil's Advocate (1997).

A crazy rich guy builds a glass house that acts a containment facility for ghosts, and after his passing leaves the house to his nephew and his family. Chicanery ensues. Strong performance by Tony Shaloub, a big performance by Matthew Lillard, and some good makeup work by Greg Nicotero. Some of the ghosts have bizarre looks that don't get explained. A guy with spikes all through his body, how did that happen? Woman with a cage on her head? Was she a "Saw" victim? There's a big mechanical device done with subpar CG.
This could have been way more interesting as a Ghostbusters movie. But it's watchable regardless.

Beast With Five Fingers is a movie I didn't know anything about. Peter Lorre is the only actor I was familiar with in it. Pretty good little murder mystery in an Italian manor where it's unknown if the killer is among the loving.

Hooah! An unrestrained Al Pacino is always entertaining, even if it isn't always the best thing for a movie. But it's exactly what this movie calls for. The title tells you what it's about. Charlize Theron is great in one of her earliest roles, save maybe for her accent being dodgy. So is Keanu's, but he's pretty good despite that. Fun fact, they filmed in real Manhattan locations, not just the streets, but courtrooms, a cathedral, and Donald Trump's apartment.

Another one I've not seen before, and it was pretty good. Very light on story, but big on mood. Rutger Hauer is very creepy and understated as the hitchhiking serial killer. When our protagonist escapes him in the beginning of the film, Hauer chases him across the desert; not to kill him, just to screw with him, like a demented Bug Bunny cartoon.
Loved this film at the time. As a kid, this was the only horror film my dad and I would watch together. Because he thought 80s horror icons like Jason and Pinhead were childish, and stuff like Dracula and Wolfman too old.

Poltergeist was me and my mom’s thing though.

    50. Shadow Of The Vampire (2000) A fictionalized, sort of "what if" account centered around the filming of F. W. Murnau's 1922 horror classic Nosferatu, imagining the actor Max Schreck, who plays Count Orlok, as an actual vampire. Willem Dafoe gives a fantastic performance as Schreck/Orlok, as does John Malkovich in the role of Murnau, the supporting cast does an excellent job as well.

    51. Let The Right One In (2008) A Swedish vampire romance story based on the novel by the same title, rather slow paced, austere and melancholic, it leaves a number of things from the book less defined and open for interpretation, and, imo, is all the better for doing so. Not much in the way of actual scares, but there is a good amount of blood on screen, and seeing an immortal 12 year old vampire with it smeared around their mouth is just a tad unnerving.

Jeez, my 6th post-2000 movie this month. It’s like I’m running out of moldy oldies!

This was fun; Samara Weaving in a torn wedding dress and running shoes playing a deadly game of hide-and-seek against a family of rich, slightly reluctant, slightly incompetent Satan worshippers. To be honest, the joke ratio wasn’t QUITE as high as I expected it to be. Most of the best gags were in the trailer. Which, granted, is the trailer’s fault, not the movie’s.

Saw "House on Haunted Hill" last night, the B&W version from the 50s. Its pretty good! Even though it does seem kind of weird that they’d leave a floor-level, huge vat of acid, one that had killed at least one other person, just intact and sitting there in the basement. I get it, though. Can't tell you how many times I have wanted one of those at my house right alongside a giant pool of quicksand! Anyhow watched the movie with my son, and he recognized the line Nora says near the end - “It’s him, he’s alive!" Apparently a favorite rapper of his uses that exact sound bite as a tag line at the beginnings of his songs. Funny world.

There is a brilliant and hilarious review of the film here:

    October 21st. 40 - The Babysitter (2017). 41 - The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)

Rewatched this ahead of the new sequel. Still enjoyable. I had completely forgotten Leslie Bibb played the mom. I still think that since the movie does some gags with graphics on the screen ala Scott Pilgrim and some other flicks, they should have committed to that bit earlier and more often. When it does happen it's a little jarring. Samara Weaving is great, though I still think "Discount Margot Robbie" whenever see her. Green Arrow's brother is the other standout among the cultists.

It's two years later...but looks more like three, and the kids can drive now but Cole was 12 in the first one. If we suppose his 13th birthday was right around the corner, it's still three years to get him and his neighbor to 16. This one takes a bit longer to get going, as the first act is all about how nobody believes Cole about what happened. Apparently, B did an incredible job of covering up, I can only assume with some infernal assistance. But even if she got rid of all rhr bodies, what about the missing people, including two cops? Anyway, it's probably not to be taken that seriously, it's still basically Evil Dead-ish teen shenanigans. Jenna Ortega joins the cast and she's quite good, she could make a fine addition to the upcoming Scream 5. There's a lot more with the parents in this one and some of it is very funny.

There's a bunch of Terminator references in this one. I guess McG feels vindicated since subsequent films were much bigger failures after his.

That acid pool has to be some kind of building-code violation.

I liked the movie, though the ending didn't satisfactorily explain all the events we saw earlier.

Notable for being the first movie where Kane Hodder donned the hockey mask, but not much else. Seeing Jason react to a victim using X-Men powers against him is pretty fun, but the overall humorous tone from Part VII is gone, there's not one character or subplot worth caring about, and the kills at this point have all been Nerfed beyond repair.

This is an Italian horror movie, and...I'm not sure I need to say anything else. Great look, great atmosphere, batshit insane story. You will believe that a cat can open a car door, climb inside, and hypnotize the driver into crashing into a lamp post. Or maybe you won't. Probably...probably you won't.

And yet somehow, still closer to the Poe short story than either of Universal's versions.

It's funny, for a movie that I only sort-of like, I do end up watching it a lot. Chalk it up to being good background music; light, cheesy, and with a nice schmear of classic monsters.
