With the Eternals and presumably the Celestials poised to explode in the mass consciousness, I do wonder if mutants' connection to them will be reemphasized in the comics, where they have been completely absent from Hickman's run, even in regards to Apocalypse, who has even more direct connections to the Celestials and the Eternals.
Let the flames destroy all but that which is pure and true!

Earth, present day. James Rhodes and Happy Hogan are summoned by Fury. He's found something buried. A robot. Huge, advanced, too. Honestly, the only thing he's ever seen that's similar is Iron Man armour, so he called in the specialists. "It's...not one of his, Nick." Rhodey says. Using the War Machine armour, he pulls the thing out, the dirt falling off it to reveal a huge, purple robot, damaged. Claw marks.

    A sentinel.

    "What the hell is this?"

Titles roll and we're in a lab as Fury and Rhodey try and download the thing's memory banks. They're suddenly attacked by...the lab itself?? Metal objects flying everywhere, the War Machine armour useless. A diamond woman approaches and wipes the memories of everyone in the lab, before it's put back together again.

But the WM armour saw everything, and uploaded it to a Stark satellite.

Fury and Rhodey track the diamond woman after reviewing the footage recorded and relayed to them by FRIDAY or whatever. They follow her out to a jungle in south America, like the land that time forgot. It's...strangely undefended. Working their way in, the find a massive chamber, a domed room, and a man in the middle of it in a wheelchair, what looks like life support attached, and a helmet. Before they can investigate, they're attacked. A white haired man floats, surrounded by metal, and he's pissed. Rhodey is prepared this time, a modulating electromagnetic field pulsing through his armour, making it harder to control for the stranger. A stray round impacts the machinery around the man in the chair. "NO!" cries the white haired man.

    And then they remember everything.

    They remember the massacre.

It's 2005 and mutants are making a big push for equality, a new civil rights movement. The radical right and anti-mutant interests aren't happy, and they've done a deal under the table with Obadiah Stane for old Howard Stark tech. The Mutant March for Freedom, a peaceful demonstration in DC, became the biggest act of American domestic terrorism in history. Thousands dead at the hands of Sentinels, privately funded by basically the MCU version of the Koch brothers.

Xavier and Magneto join forces then, now terrified for the future of mutants. So they hatch a plan. From a base in the Savage Land, they'll build SuperCerebro, to which Charles will be hooked up and kept on life support. He'll suppress the entire world's knowledge of mutants, while they live peacefully on an island whose location will be a mystery to literally everyone on earth. Using cerebro, Charles influenced all mutants to make their way to pick up points for transport to Krakoa. Of course, some of his students didn't like this idea. They still believed in the "dream." So they were mind wiped with the humans.

Cut to a school in New York, Scott Summers is a teacher in a school for the blind. He's walking home and it's like the world blinks. He remembers. And so does the whole world.

The rest of the movie is the world reacting to the newly regained memories of mutants, new sentinels using actual shanghaied Stark tech mounting an assault on Krakoa, as Xavier prepares to mindwipe the world again and Scott rallies the X-Men to stop both sides and integrate mutantkind into the world once more. (Say the movie comes out in 2025, that means mutants have been absent from the world for 20 years). Scott is our hero, the guy who still thinks we can all live in harmony. He's FURIOUS that he was robbed of his true life for 20 years. He sees things like the battle of new york and challenges Xavier on how different things could have been if the world could have seen the X-men fight alongside Captain America. But they never got the chance. And he was robbed of the greatest love of his life, of Jean. Jean, by the way, takes 50% of cerebros processing power alone, to keep her under. She's been having a decades long debate with Xavier on the astral plane since day 1 of this.

Anyway, I know this plot is a little meta, but I had fun coming up with it. I'd probably have the 5 original X-men make the main team, plus Ororo, Piotr and maaaaybe Kurt.

Logan's brain actively fought and evolved against repeated psychic manipulation as a side effect of his mutation, so he's in a cell under the savage lands.

    GOMLZARK!

"Summers, I swear to god if you kept me waiting for 20 years and didn't bring a beer, I'll kill you myself."

    Scott tosses a six pack.

"Oh Captain, my captain." he grins. It's go time.

Mutants exists but Charles and Magneto hid them on Krakoa. The mutant population is rather small but the snap actually created a ton more. The Quiet Council start to differ on how to deal with the new amount of mutants and their approach to humanity.

It's basically inverse/reverse of the current comic status quo. The Moira reincarnation stuff probably happens but its not something we need to establish right away.

I wanted to do a potential phase 5 where the X-men villians get paired up with the existing MCU heroes. It's a fast way to do worldbuilding and do some fun matchups.

    MCU spoilers

    spoilers:
So Pietro showed up on WandaVision.

    The Evan Peters version.

They also make specific reference in the show that he is *not* the ATJ version (in that they don't do a Rhodey and just act like it's not a completely different guy), and the audio description specifically, verbatim, says it's the version from the X-Men films
    end of spoilers

    Sooo....that's a thing.

I saw someone point this out on twitter, but the Evan Peters version of Quicksilver IS from the 80s, so it all fits quite well.

Btw, I'm getting the impression that Wanda will end up retconning herself into a mutant, and creating mutants in the MCU as a way of making it all make sense. It would be funny if instead of nearly destroying the mutant race, she ends up creating them.

DOFP is 70s actually (which makes stuff like him being called a "kid" 20+ years later in Dark Phoenix confusing) but close enough.

Oh right he was in that one first, I was thinking of Apocalypse. That one is in the 80s right?

Also, it was totally Billy and Tommy who brought back Pietro, right? Because they wanted to make their mom feel good. It may explain why it's a different one, since they don't know him.

    spoilers:

it is so wonderful that the MCU is also indirectly paying respect to the FOX universes' brilliant idea of creating an entire timeline for their universe with re-casting Evan Peters. of course it went really sideways with X-Men: Apocalypse but the MCU and movies like Captain Marvel and Wanda Vision are clearly inspired by the X-Men universe's idea.

God, it feels so good to see this character back on screen. I'm probably the only one but I'm already really nostalgic for the X-Men movies!

Yeah I like the WandaVision theory: desperate for her brother but unable to raise him from the dead she pulls him from another universe, which might leave a door open wide enough for the rest of the X-men/Fantastic Four/Spiderman whomever to cross over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That's what I wanted and what moved me to tears when he popped up on screen....but...knowing how Kevin Feige works, I fear this may be a meta/misdirect and he'll be someone else.

    spoilers:
I have a feeling he's not really the Quicksilver from the Fox X-Men universe but rather a simple "recast" of the original one... So basically a giant Easter Egg. That said, we do have a multiverse coming up so nothing's off the table. I must say Paul Bettany's hints on the big cameo at the end of the series made me think of Ian McKellen or Michael Fassbender... but it's probably all wishful thinking LOL

I think you’re spot on... even though I hope it’s someone else... the only one who could be bigger in my mind and would put the appearance on “Luke Skywalker in Mandalorian level.”

Right? and also the fact that he said it's an actor he always wanted to work with... so both of them I could see Paul admiring.
