I think that's the real purpose why Hickman chose Cypher as one of the ten because it makes no sense when there are more powerful sword-bearers around. I know it's supposed to be Saturnye who chose but the main story is written by Hickman.....

I assume Doug will win in some way other than fighting. Maybe he talks to the opponent's sentient sword in its own language and convinces it to stab its wielder.

Yeah, I don't think Doug will get defeated as easily as it's being foreshadowed. It would make for a very predictable story
