Congratulations to Scott Taylor of a marvelous cover which definitely centered on its two characters. It was an iconic event in American superhero comics and one which anyone there at the time was excited about. Go big, or go home, I guess.

As to what the captain has learned in this contest's peak of the week, the duo. Stories aren't just about a character, they are about how a character deals with something. Thus the antagonist and protagonist roles. I found my Junior and Senior High School English classes to be very helpful in further appreciating the story content of my funny books. The relationship can be either a partnership or an adversarial one. Sometimes, it was both. In many books (and other forms of story), we often focused on a pair. With a pair, a writer is able to focus the story and get to the point, as opposed to meandering through a large cast. Even in books with large casts, the best most powerful stories are short tales with two main characters.

Thanks to Shalla Bal for her appreciation of a Kirby Sinnott test run for a Silver Surfer series and her generous vote expressing it. And I am ashamed to say, I just realized the connection. Oh, well, off to another great contest!

I could not pass up on the Frog cover joke, even if it garnered me no votes.

But were I to post a more serious cover, it would have been one of these from Barry Smith.

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

And now, for the big prize, describe CaptCleghorn's contest philosophy in one sentence...

    Congratulations Scott.

This was the other cover I considered, that I thought someone else might choose.

I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

    Congratulations to Scott Taylor

BTW, I am not sure who the artist (s) are for that cover. Looking at the Spider-Man figure, it looks like John Romita Sr. but I don't think he did it.

The cover was by Ross Andru, as was the art in the book. BUT, the figures of Superman were touched up/ redrawn by Neal Adams and Spider-Man by Romita Sr.

    You can see it in panels like this;

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Yep, Kirby has the right of it. The notion at the time was that Neal Adams was better at faces, so Andru's work on Superman in particular was touched up. From what I have read, it was the cover and some of the interior as well. Andru was not too happy about it. So that book is a collaboration of sorts on artwork, mainly by Andru but with some amount of touchup work that is fairly detectable. Guess Marvel thought the book was too big to fail! Funny, though, I think of Adams as a Batman guy rather than a Superman guy. Surprised they didn't get Swan instead.

Thank you all for the kudos! I promise to have a new contest up very soon, need to check to make sure my ideas for one aren't already taken.

And seismic-2, thank you for that cover, it is quite bodacious! Betty and Veronica are probably my first two comics loves.
