Default Favorite comedy movies and TV shows

What are your favorite comedy movies and shows?

I really enjoy comedy and fun. One of my fave comedy movies is Scott Pilgrim VS the World. Makes me laugh a lot! It's such a great action-fantasy movie too.

For shows, I love The Nanny. I really like all the characters, especially Niles, he's so sassy and funny.

I've never been a comedy movie buff. For me, comedy works best in the half-hour sitcom format. It's faster moving and breezier that way.

Even when they do special hour long episodes of sitcoms, they often lose momentum before they're through.

It's hard to sustain the funny stuff for an extended period of time if it's a straight comedy.

If they combine comedic elements with action/adventure/scifi, then it can work better because then it just becomes THAT genre, but done with a lighter tone.

So, movies like Men in Black, Austin Powers, Deadpool, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. work because they use the tropes of another genre comedically.

Often, Hollywood will make their comedies raunchy to sustain the laughs like Porky's, the Hangover series, etc.

I'm not saying there aren't good comedy movies, but a steady diet of two hour comedies wouldn't feel like I'm watching anything substantial.

As far as TV, I like most of the sitcoms mentioned above, but I have to say that I find most 1960s sitcoms to be rather witless and idiotic.

This is my 1500th post for those keeping track at home.

Good points. I think my favorite movies and shows that have lots of comedy, really are a mix of 2 or 3 genres like action or romance, etc. 2 examples are the spy show CHUCK, which had lots of action and romance. And THE WEDDING SINGER, which also had romance.

Edit: another great example is the animated show AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER. It even had lots of drama, but I guess the rules are different since it's animation geared for kids first. I don't expect a live action version to be as comedic..

I'm not really a fan of slapstick comedy, especially violent one, but there are always some exceptions.
