I think we’ve seen that the fanbase can do something with a character(s), even if it appears that the company has no interest in doing so.
We’ve seen the strength of an active fanbase in regards to the Young Justice tv show (even if it is on thin ice at the moment). All things take time, but if the fans want it bad enough, then it likely will happen, for better or for worse.
