Kamandi Last boy on earth omnibus vol. 2 question.

Does Kamandi omnibus vol. 2 work well on it's own? Is there a sort of beginning and ending?

Does it detail the world enough, for example some details about his upbringing in Command D and what not.

Reason I wonder is that I can't find Kamandi omnibus vol. 1 at a reasonable price. I'v had a similar problem with the 4th World omnibuses, with vol. 2 being very expensive. So I only own vol. 3 and 4, but they really work very well on it's own. Detailing how the war between Apokolips and New Genesis began, the truce and then ending things between Dark Seid and Orion.

I'm hoping Kamandi Omnibus vol. 2 works in a similar way but with talking dolphins and other wild weird stuff.
