These are by Scott McCloud, from either Understanding Comics (his most famous book) or Reinventing Comics.
Author of the law review article "The Lawyer as Superhero: How Marvel Comics' Daredevil Depicts the American Court System and Legal Practice," Capital University Law Review, Vol. 47, No. 2 (2019).

Yes and I took it from the book. But I don't know who the characters are.

Are you talking about the smaller depictions and who they actually represent?
I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

The last of the first line is, I think, Hopey from Locas (Love & Rockets).

The middle one from the second line is Vladek Spiegelman, from Maus.

The last one from the second line is Buddy Bradley from Hate.

I don't mean to second-guess you, but looking closer, I think McCloud included Maggie rather than Hopey. Maggie usually has a rounder face (and fuller figure) and looks friendlier and happier.
