Default If Clark was not raised by the Kents, would he have ended up like Homelander?

If Clark was not raised by the Kents, would he have ended up like Homelander? Homelander is a Superman pastiche that is the main villain of the series the Boys, someone who has the powers like Superman's, but grew up in a lab with no love and became a psychopath as an adult.

There have been stories where Superman was raised by Stalin or Darkseid and was less heroic as a result, but was not as vile as Homelander.

Well that depends on his upbringing and environment again. If he is raised bad, but still have a good friend, he will be still Superman for better or worse.

I completely agree with you. It is simple and elegant.

It'd kind of a toss-up. Sometimes you get stories like Red Son which make Superman still Superman even if his methods are a bit off. Other times you get things like Injustice where a character seems identical to "our" Superman until something pushes him over the moral edge.

So I can see a story where Kal-el's rocket is found by the Manson family and he still comes out heroic or stories where he is raised by Ben and May Parker but becomes a serial killer. Relies more on the writer's whim than the actual people raising him.

“Brightburn” argues that a good upbringing and good parents don’t guarantee a good person. The same could be said about the opposite.

Not having good parents doesn’t mean he’ll end up like Homelander.

But, the Brightburn become evil because of the alien ship, so it's not really an example.

Only if he was raised by Type A sociopaths who taught him that he is the only thing that matters.

Homelander is what Ennis really thinks of Superman.

No he isn't. Ennis likes Superman. Homelander is what Ennis thinks a corrupted Superman would be. That's it.

Just bumping this to say that even a Dark Multiverse Flashpoint version of Superman raised in a prison by the military still possesses enough empathy to want to help others. So there’s some differences between the two that are hardwired as a part of who Clark is.

There was a pair of Elseworlds mini-series called JLA: The Nail and JLA: Another Nail both written and penciled by Alan Davies that had Superman raised by an Amish couple because the Kents got a nail in the tire of their truck when they were supposed to find him as a baby and how the DCU gets really screwed up, (especially the JLA) without Superman. The villain in the first one was a real shock when I first read it.
