Default If Clark was not raised by the Kents, would he have ended up like Homelander?

If Clark was not raised by the Kents, would he have ended up like Homelander? Homelander is a Superman pastiche that is the main villain of the series the Boys, someone who has the powers like Superman's, but grew up in a lab with no love and became a psychopath as an adult.

There have been stories where Superman was raised by Stalin or Darkseid and was less heroic as a result, but was not as vile as Homelander.

Well that depends on his upbringing and environment again. If he is raised bad, but still have a good friend, he will be still Superman for better or worse.

It'd kind of a toss-up. Sometimes you get stories like Red Son which make Superman still Superman even if his methods are a bit off. Other times you get things like Injustice where a character seems identical to "our" Superman until something pushes him over the moral edge.

So I can see a story where Kal-el's rocket is found by the Manson family and he still comes out heroic or stories where he is raised by Ben and May Parker but becomes a serial killer. Relies more on the writer's whim than the actual people raising him.

“Brightburn” argues that a good upbringing and good parents don’t guarantee a good person. The same could be said about the opposite.

Not having good parents doesn’t mean he’ll end up like Homelander.

But, the Brightburn become evil because of the alien ship, so it's not really an example.

Was it specifically said it was because of the spaceship?

Well, according to movie and producer (James Gunn) he becomes psychopath after he touches the spaceship. Their wording is after learning his heritage and brainwashed by the ship, he reject his humanity... After he dropped his mom, he should say: I reject my humanity mom with So no chi no sadame playing.

I can't remember if it was because of the ship or if it was because his species just naturally became homicidal when they reached a certain age.

He probably wouldn't have been as good as he is with the Kent's influence, but outside being raised in hellish conditions, he'd probably still become a well-meaning dude. Probably rougher around the edges, but most Supermen tend to skew on the side of good. It's only when raised by your Darkseids and whathaveyou that he goes full-tilt jackass.

Injustice superman and justice lord says hi. Even with good influence that guy became an authoritarian.

A fan of comics would tell you that Superman is the result of his education and his own nature, so except in extreme cases it is normal for him to remain a good man. A fan of money (DC) will tell you that he is already a Homelander but luckily the kents found him as a child and lois as an adult, but as soon as they are not he will become a Homelander.

You know, this thread reminds me of the Elseworld JL "The Nail" by if I am not wrong, it's Alan Davis. In that universe, Martha and Jonathan Kent's truck has a tire puncture caused by a nail. This prevents them from discovering the spaceship containing the baby Kal-El, and so, there's no Superman. But, Clark is still there as a good person because the Amish adopt him, and in fact, this Clark is far more pacifist than his main counterpart because according to every JL. So it returns how the environment raised him.

It's a common trope explored in super-hero comics for evil doubles, Superman remains a good man in most universes. Them turning didn't make every version of Superman secretly authoritarian.
