It's The Question for me. I also recall the JL:U animated series confirming that TQ was the second best detective in the entire Justice League, but I can't say 100% that this is confirmed in the main mythos.

The Question is maybe my second or third favorite DC character, but I think of him more as the "dogged, determined gumshoe who throws fists" kind of detective rather than a "Sherlock Holmes, brilliant deductive skills/mind of a steel trap" kind of detective. And that's without the conspiracy nut angle, which means he thinks outside the box, but in my mind puts him safely in the top 10, but maybe not even cracking top 5.
I don't know if Bruce / Batman would really even qualify as DC's "Best Detective" these days . . .
from Detective Comics #1000
Batman's got so many appearances he'll have some highs and lows but more often than not he's the best. He's DC's top dogs and being a detective and all around big brain is one of his traits.
as for number two well it's the guy that fills in when Batman is not around. Dick Grayson
The J-man
So far, the names that seem to be getting mentions by more than just one person are:Detective Chimp - Bobo
Elongated Man - Ralph Dibney
Lois Lane
Martian Manhunter - J'onn J'onnz
The Question - Vic Sage / Charles Victor Szasz
Clark Kent (Superman)
NOTE: I'm not including "Nightwing - Dick Grayson" nor "(Red) Robin - Tim Drake" in that list since they either have been or will likely be "Batman" at some point.
Lan-celot Link! Se-cret Chimp! Ba-ba baaaaa baaa baaaaa
...
Anyone? No?
For anybody interested, I've made a new thread/poll based on many of the previous responses to this thread:Best Detective in the DC Universe (not named Batman and not previously Robin)
