Default When it comes to Batman/Superman comics

and I'm not just talking about the newest Joshua Williamson series, are they mostly stand alone stories? I mean dating back from the World's Finest Silver Age Days as well? I know that the Jeph Loeb series is spun out of the President Lex storyline, but if you're not a regular Superman reader, do you have to have read that story before jumping in? Same with Death Metal before Joshua Willamson series?

Mostly yeah. Public Enemies have everyone, heroes and villains, but I had no problem with it since they have a short narration of who they are, and most of them are cameo. Also, they keep the plot simple.
