Default Amazon Combat and Power Systems Thread

A thread to discuss Amazon powers, combat skills and weapons. Both canon and non-canon. Discuss your ideas for what you would like Amazons abilities to be and what examples you liked either from fan creation or from the comics themselves.

In any medium, if she is portrayed as she should be, then she should be at the top of any skill level involving combat skills and use of most types of weapons. If she has been training most of her life to fight with the amazons and with her meta abilities like superspeed, superstrength, it would have to take someone with incredible skills and abilities to 'hang' with her.

For example, in a fight with someone like Lady Shiva, Diana should have at a minimum her skill set, but combined with her meta abilities Lady Shiva doesn't get past a couple of seconds in a fight against her. For a writer to do otherwise diminishes the skills and powers that Diana has just to make sure a 'normal' opponent like Lady Shiva gets to shine. Diana is not a 'street level' fighter and the writers should do well to remember that, but I guess that is a topic for another thread

Diana is definitely one of the greatest warriors and melee fighters in the entire DCU. While she prefers her lasso, bracers, and hands, her Amazon training makes her adept at using a tremendous array of handheld weapons, from swords and shields to bows and arrows to staves - although she finds most of those unnecessary.

She incredibly good at improvising with whatever is available to her.

Diana knows a couple of different martial arts that were specifically developed by the Amazons and she’s one of the most adept warriors amongst the Amazons and in the Justice League at taking on and subduing multiple combatants through her Amazon training and super-abilities.

At least that’s how I would consistently portray her in comics, animation, television, and film.

What should be the source of the Amazons' powers?

I'd say go golden age, make them the result of amazonian martial arts.

    My canon

    Two sources of Amazon powers:

Divine combat or Amazon Enhanced Combat: Based on the Golden Age powers. Amazon fighting styles that grant superhuman strength, speed, agility, stamina, durability and senses. There exist a variety of techniques for dealing with both human and superhuman enemies. Training involves use of weapons including swords, staffs, axes and guns. Amazons are recently looking into integrating principles and techniques from other fighting styles. Training begins with tutelage in normal martial arts before powers are unlocked. It is possible for flight to be used but this is a very advanced technique.

Magic: For Amazons who prefer to tread the path of sorcerers and mystics. Disciplines include elemental control, exorcism and transmutation.

It is possible for Amazons to merge aspects of these two sources together as seen with Artemis/Anipe and Nubia.

I would got with enhanced abilities like strength, endurance and speed that is much higher than normal humans.

For Diana, she would be given gifts from the Gods like Perez version. Otherwise, if she is in the same category like her sisters, that doesn't really make her special with respect to her own people. If they have to shoe horn in a amazon trial to see who is most worthy of being their champion, then maybe a magical spell to make sure Diana's powers are on par with the rest of her sisters to make it a fair contest. Then give her powers back after she wins the contest.

I actually like the idea that the powers were gifts to the winner of the contest. Diana is still sculpted from clay, but she's still just an amazon, she enters the contest having no inherit advantage and wins, and as a prize the gods grant her gifts in the temple of Athena and Aphrodite or some grand temple. This could set up an amazon villain, Aresia, who instead of being a cartoon misandrist was the amazon that tied with Diana and lost in the final "bullets and bracelets" test. She gets bitter and blames Diana for being the queen's daughter and getting special treatment as the reason why she lost, so she wants the gifts of the Gods for herself and fights Diana to try and steal it.

Some mixture of Perez and Rucka, average Amazon is around Captain America-level from years of training but Diana gets her powers that bring her to flying brick levels from the goddesses following winning the contest.

I would give every Amazon the same power set as WW, except they can't use it out outside of the island for a long time, but if this is not the case, I would make sure that every Amazon is:

    1. At least 10x strength, speed, and resiliency of the strongest human being while in Paradise Island
    2. Have a strong resiliency towards magic blasts, mind control and transformational spells
    3. Their martial arts skills are special in a manner that their strikes and blows, hand to hand and weaponry, can actually harm impervious beings and magical creatures. Their fighting style, has evolved into a modern singular style that encompasses all internal martial arts techniques on highly efficient body mechanics allowing them to augment their already naturally given gifts (no. 1) to almost double in strength, power and resiliency. They are also experts in gymnastics, terrain climbing, forest survival, hunting, tracking, swimming, etc.
    4. Their armor made of Amazonium is a leather-metal combo blend that is flexible and light yet almost unbreakable even by the most powerful meta humans, allowing them to even take stronger blows
