One of the posters available from the Calvary Comics website is this one by E. J. Pace which beautifully contrasts a poem of bitter unbelief with that of radiant faith in Jesus Christ.

The former is "Invictus," penned by avowed atheist William Ernest Henley, a Victorian era English poet who wrote it while convalescing after having his leg amputated due to tuberculosis. An aside: his friend Robert Louis Stevenson modeled Treasure Island's Long John Silver after Henley.

The latter is "My Captain" by Dorothea Day, an early 20th century journalist who, formerly enamored of Henley's writings, came to know Jesus Christ as her Lord and personal Saviour. She wrote her poem as a rebuttal to Henley's, seeing its misguided bravado in the light of God's eternal Word.

E. J. Pace (1879-1946) was a fine Bible scholar, artist, musician, and itinerant lecturer whose biography is mentioned in an earlier post. His unswerving devotion to Christ was the earmark of all of his post-conversion writings and artwork.
