Yang was tackling that aspect head on, and making it a central part of the run. Plus the Great Ten themselves can get stereotypical, remember Mother of Champions? End of the day the JLC was created by Yang and he knows Chinese culture, his ideas with regards to rep are better.

Maybe they would develop their own niches towards the end? They start out as copies and become distinct.

China's premier superteam being a bunch of thinly disguised knockoffs of American superheroes was probably one of the most spot on accurate depictions of Chinese business strategy. Yang was well aware of this and played that aspect wonderfully.

And I cannot praise his salvaging of Ching-Lung and Sensei from their stereotypical beginnings into truly worthy characters that enrich the DCU was also a thing of beauty

I do get it that them being stereotypical was the point. Of course Yang is way more versed in Chinese culture them me. But I was saying that I think that kind of concept can’t last forever, because it can be pretty thin. I don’t want DC’s primary team of heroes from one country be so derivative of another’s. At one point they need to develop their own identities.

    Should give Yang another series.

**** port the JLC characters to Monkey King and do like a whole thing with them. The Wonder-Woman of China is already an actual Chinese mythological character so it be perfect.

Knock-offs of American superheroes fit China at that particular point in time, but now that Xi is banging the nationalism drum more loudly, it makes less and less sense.

What that would be now? I have no idea. Things are certainly getting uglier over there right now and I wouldn't trust most comics creators outside of Yang and a handful of others to handle that ugliness with any degree of tact.

Well **** with how things are going over there and since the CCP is making a point of banning western movies from premiering over there, might as well allow Yang and other such capable writers full purview of stories set in China.

Its not like there's anymore financial incentive to placate the CCP to get access to the Chinese box office. Might allow Kenan more chance to get into adaptations now.

So your proposal is instead of use a derivative team of heroes, is to use another derivative team of heroes? Because I don't think you had notice than the great Ten were Avengers knock offs:

August General in armor: Captain America, the patriotic supersoldier
Red Socialist Guardian: Iron Man. The armored supporter of his country ideology.
Celestial Archer: Thor/Hawkeye the violet archer (with mythology background)
Thundermind: Thor, or Hyperion the most powerful member the Superman analog
Fox Ghost Killer: Black Widow, the femme fatale
Shaolin Robot: Vision, the turnabout artificial being.
Accomplished Perfec Physician: Doctor Strange, the magician from the Tibet.
Mother of Champions: Scarlet Witch, capable of being mothers in unusual circunstances.
Seven Deadly Brothers: Quicksilver, beign in several places at time
Immortal Man in Darkness: Wonderman. Actors with a perchance to "resurrect".
Yeti: Hulk. The mindless duality of man and beast.

In hindsight I would've just made Kenan and his friends apprentices to the great 10. So far I prefer the great ten design wise. They are more like analogies to the Avengers and unless you point it out, they aren't obvious ones.

I had friends who wrote Kenan off as a knockoff in poor taste so the JL analogues came at a cost.

Having him be in on the foundation of the Family should help spare him the fate of Cir, Linda, Matrix, and all the other Superfamily members who disappeared into Limbo.
I wonder if Yang writing Lazarus Planet with Waid hints at Yang getting a bit more influence in DC or was it just Waid needing a co-writer and picking Yang? Because if Yang is getting more influence then maybe Kenan being on this team is connected to that. Nobody wants his toys forgotten.

As for Justice League of China, I loved the run and I agree that them being derivative was the point, but it doesn't really have legs. You have to change some names and concepts for it to really develop into an actual franchise.

Derivatives of another company are easier sell. We have enough not-Batmen and not-Supermen as it is.

Lol someone asked PKJ if he had any plans to bring back Anguish (New 52 Superman villain) and he said he’d check her out.

Man I had forgotten that character completely. Now I’m curious to go back and look at her again, see why someone would want her to return.

Waid had been talking to Yang for a while, he asked Yang for advice on Nezha since that’s an actual character from Chinese Mythology. I think the two just hit it off and Waid wanted to bring Yang back into the center of DC. Yang’s editor for New Superman was Kaminski who is now the head of the Superbooks, which might also play a part both in Yang’s return and in Kenan getting a push again. I am certainly hoping to see Yang do more at DC, either with Kenan or others once Monkey Prince wraps up.

I do think at one point Yang may have mentioned wanting to change the names of the characters. If he’s on board with the prospect, and creates the new names I guess I’d roll with that. But I’d rather Kenan keep being “Super-Man” given the other competing “Supermen” are nowhere near as strong characters as Kenan. Of the bunch he’s the one who is the most interesting Superman successor/revamp for me.
