Default A Bizarre New World, Chapter One: Cat’s In The Cradle

They say these crossroads are where the devil comes to pray. People avoid it in the daylight, sayin' that the sun is just a bit dimmer there and the air smells faintly of brimstone. At night... well... people don't talk about what goes on durin' the night.

Now, I ain't a superstitious man. Stepped on enough cracks to break my momma's back a thousand times over as a kid, but she can still whip my ass as a grown man. Superstitious, no... but desperate... that's a whole 'notha story. I may be shabby-lookin' but used to be a pretty damn good musician if I do say so myself. Had a promisin' career until the jealous husband of a devote fan shot me in the hand. Hard to do anything with it, nonetheless play a tune anymore but the music still calls me. It haunts my ears whenever it gets quiet in the middle of the night. That's why I'm out here in the darkness of midnight, led by the moonlight.

They say these crossroads are where the devil comes to pray, and I intend to bargain with him.

    --Joel Joestar, 1932

    「August 22, 22 P.I.」

Regardless of how much you knew of your father, during this journey to attend the reading of his will, you had become quickly become acquainted with the closest friend of the Joestar family: traveling difficulties. Scheduling delays, mechanical issues, heavy turbulence, emergency landings, flat tires, blown radiators, car-jackings, train robberies; you had suffered it all. It was as if Hermes himself had been slighted and was taking it out on you, but if there had been any silver lining to this, it was that it had proven effective in weeding out a lot of the chaff. Seventy-four of you had begun this trip and now less than twenty remained.

If anyone were to ask you where you all currently were, the best you would probably come up with was "Somewhere in Texas". To be fair, this place wasn't much a town, or anything really. Just a crossroads, a bus stop, and a suspiciously modern-looking truck stop called the Junction Stop whose rustic looking sign clashed fiercely against the overall aesthetic. This would be your home for the next hour while you all waited for the bus to come. The possibilities for entertainment were boundless, such as reading the nutritional label of that local brand of gummy worms, playing the one solitary arcade machine, True Bark Hunting 17 -named because of the year, not the number of games in the series (apparently there were 36 in all if the amount of logos plastered on the side were any indication)-, or maybe wait for lone employee of the built-in sandwich shop to come back from her smoke break.

Aside from your eccentric family, there were only a handful of other people at the truck stop, two of which were a cashier and a local chit-chatting.

"Lot of folks have been passing through here lately..."
"Marge tells me it's related to Speedwagon. Her nephew used to work for them, you know. He says they're conducting an experiment out there..."
"That boy's a damn liar and you know it. It's probably just the company running around while they figure out who's replacing Joestar."

The next hour threatened to be a long one. Perhaps now would be a good time to get to know some of your step-siblings... or the ones left that had been stubborn enough to endure all of this with you. Either that or you could explore the truck-shop for the 16th time hoping for something new?

Looking out the window of the bus as it pulled up into the bus stop, she had the feeling that this was about as much as the middle of nowhere as a person could get. Once it pulled up and the doors opened, she stood up and placed her paperback in her travel bag. Draping it over her shoulder, she stepped out of the bus and into the hot Texas sun.

The driver of the bus also exited and went to the back where the luggage was stored. Following him there, Jinny pointed to the medium sized grey and blue suitcase, then taking it from him as he pulled it out of the compartment. Reaching inter her bag, she pulled out a wallet and handed him a 20. Though he initially refused the tip, her insistence was all to persuasive.

Pulling the wheeled suitcase behind her, she paused to look up at the sign, "Junction Stop", then looked closer at the building. It was not what she was expecting, which actually made it even more fascinating.

The trip had been a long one, as if the geographical distance between New Jersey and Texas had somehow been multiplied several times over. The plane ride to Chicago was the most harrowing one she had ever been on, yet they managed to land without crashing. From there she needed to make her way south, a trip that involved one Uber Driver who kept getting lost, and several buses inching slowly from state to state.

Whether to make the trip or not was an easy decision. She had always been curious as to whom her father was, and traveling was in her blood. It is one of the ways in which she drew inspiration for her artwork. Even now she was tempted to pull out her sketch book, yet she resisted that temptation. It was enough that she would remember this place in the future.

Entering the building, she looked around, closely taking in everything, even the conversation going on near the cash register. Glancing at the watch on her wrist, she noted the time. One hour until the next, and hopefully last bus came along.

After a short visit to the ladies restroom, Jinny made her way to the counter to see if she could get something to drink. Something cold, perhaps an Iced tea or a Lemonade, or even a Soda would do.

Note: Jinny is wearing comfortable walking shoes, casual slacks and a matching short sleeved top. Her lightweight jacket is draped over her travel bag, and her hair is tied behind her in a single pony tail.

With the sputtering of an old, dying engine well past its time...A red pick up truck came to a stop along the road just a short distance from the stop. The owner, a balding but generally pleasant looking farmer, reached out the window and gave the door a couple slaps with his hand as a signal. "Here we are little lady....Junction Stop, middle of nowhere."

There was a shudder of movement from the back of the truck, followed by a young woman peering out over the side for a moment. Her eyes scanned the surroundings, slowly and methodically, before she turned her attention to strapping a guitar case over her shoulder. With one quick motion, she tossed her legs up and over the side...landing softly on the road.

"....Thank you....for the ride." The girl took a moment to find the words she needed. "I'm sorry, I don't have anything to pay you with."

"Awww think nuthing of it." The man boomed. "Ya sure ya wanna get off here? I could take ya to the next city."

"No...this is fine..." The girl replied quietly.

"Suit yourself then...." The driver let out a loud chuckle. "You be careful now...." He took one last look back to make sure she had her belongings, and then pulled back onto the road to continue his own journey.

Lucy glanced around once more, readjusting the strap on her guitar case. There was no guitar of course....but nobody needed to know that, and her previous pack had met a inglorious end in a ditch some days back, so it was at least a functional replacement. Everything in order, she walked the last hundred meters or so to the rest stop....where she could hopefully make the remainder of the trip via bus.

The stop was...underwhelming at best, not that it would have mattered. After weeks of travel, the girl had barely the coin left to afford travel...let along waste it on frivolous truck stop sandwiches...

Her stomach roared like a feral tiger.....which she promptly ignored.

Finding a seat in the corner, the woman quietly placed her case in her lap and began taking stock of some of the other arrivals and unconsciously mapping the surroundings in her head.

A cloud of dust approached, screaming down the road like a cheetah on crack. Accompanied by the roar of a diesel engine, it was obvious to whoever was bothering to pay attention that the only thing that could create a cloud that obnoxiously boisterous was a truck. A truck that was on its absolute very last leg. The exhaust backfired, ejecting a stream of pitch black smoke that smothered any previously undisturbed breathable air that had been floating about behind it. The truck slowed as the engine coughed and died on the spot, creeping to a halt just before coming up to the curb belonging to what looked like a truck stop of some time.

Looked like it was the bus from then on.

Fucking great. Just what she was hoping for: to be trapped on a steel deathtrap with dozens of other asswipes who probably didn't bathe or even know what the **** a bath was, just like every other inbred hick that infested that stupid fucking state.

Black smoke billowed out from under the hood of the badly abused truck, accompanied by a quiet hiss that probably meant the radiator was shot. Whatever.

The driver's side door swung open, followed quickly by a puke-green duffle bag and a pair of black and red sneakers. Sandra slammed the door closed. "Piece of ****," she muttered. She scanned her surroundings. Ever since she had been in the UUAC, it had been one ****-hole after the other. The place she currently found herself in was no different.

She sighed and picked up her bag. "Might as well find something to eat." She walked inside the truck stop and found a place to sit down. Whoever the **** was supposed to be manning the sandwich counter was too busy fingering their ass to bother doing their fucking job. What fucking luck. She turned on her heels and walked back outside.

She sighed again and pulled out a pack of smokes she lifted from the same poor bastard she stole the truck and five hundred dollars from. ******* was probably still asleep in his hotel room, or just waking up to find out that "Mexican hooker" he lucked out on skipped town with half his **** ages ago. She lit up and took a puff. "This **** had better be worth it."

John had spent the majority of the Bus Ride buried in a book. It was one of his favorites, Steven Hawking's A Brief History of Time. Quite engrossing, and spotting exactly what had been disproven since it's publication kept him on his toes. He'd been too invested in it to make any talk with the other passengers, and there was a decent chance that he would have missed his stop, had it not been for an alarm he'd set on his phone when the ride began.

Once the Truck had pulled to a stop, he returned the tome to his back pack, and disembarked after the ponytailed girl.

He found himself a seat, and continued reading, until...

The sound of the girl's stomache ordinarily might not have been enough to shake him out of his thoughts, but by this point he was feeling hungry himself, and in need of hydration. So he got up to head into the store for a bite of his own. To his surprise, the girl did not get food of her own, merely sat.

'She must not have the money to spend.' He thought to himself as he entered the shop. After taking a moment to peruse their hot meals, he settled on getting some chicken tenders, and a cheeseburger. While the man behind the counter got them out, he swung by the fridges and retrieved two bottles of water.

After paying for the food, he stepped out and returned to his seat, setting the chicken and one of the bottles of water there.

Then he walked over to where the girl was sitting, and dropped the wrapped burger into her lap. After setting the eater bottle down next to her, he returned to his seat and began to eat.

John Goode loved tackling the complex questions of quantum physics, but he was also well aware of the basics of life. If a person was hungry, feed them.

Cold water dripped from the tap, and no matter how hard she twist it, that was that. She counted the drops as she leaned over the stained white of the sink, pip-pip-pip, the hollow feeling within her chest climbing. Every time her heart steadied itself to the sound of the droplets, she felt her face grow hot and the beats swelled.

Suppose that's the issue with somatic memory, innit? Not about to let the matter go, yeah?

With a defeated sigh, Suzie stared at her reflection in the dotted mirror. She didn't remember if she slept, yet if there were any change in her eyes in the fifteen hours from London-Heathrow to Austin-Bergstrom, it remained concealed under the fixative and eyeshadow.

Chicago, transfer to Texas. Why'd she go right down the middle, straight into the thick of it? Everything was strange in this country; laneways on the left, take a moment too long to sort your papers and they threaten to toss you in the pokey, with prices as advertised and a bit extra...

Idly she tousled a shock of raven hair. The slit grate behind the motionless fan installation ebbed hot rays of sunshine, and with it thin, choking air which did little to lift the sharp, chemical after-scent in the lavatory.

    Pip-pip-pip.

...God, what am I doing here? Couldn't pull me out of the flat on a Friday...

She'd turned down a gig to be here; a week with the flu, she said, followed by skipping town entirely. It must have been dawn across the pond. Did they manage to start on time with the difference in lighting, and had Sarah finished the measurements?

Even while this tense, this lightheaded, he thoughts were going back to routine. She was beside herself when the fever hit, but when she got the letter, nothing seemed to make sense anymore, and it made her want to fall through the world entirely.

Noone had an answer for that. Dad, Mum, they were hardly concerned, they couldn't see it.

Pressing her lips together, Suzie pulled her roller behind her as meekly pushed the door open back to the terminal.

Fingering through the aisles of the little shop, Suzie queued up behind, eavesdropping silently as she lay out a pack of crisps and a curiously long bottle of tonic water that had caught her fancy, forcing a narrow smile and saying little else.

The screeching of a dying engine caused her to cringe, and by the sound of doors slamming harshly, somebody was making a rather eager entrance to this little hovel. They were in the middle of nowhere, should anything happen, would anybody know it?

"...ring up this as well?" she said as she hastily pulled some summer fashion rag off the newspaper rack. "Cheers."

By the time she'd gathered the heart to turn around and lift her eyes, it seemed the storm that rolled in had gone back outside for now, much to her relief.

"It never is," Came the monotone voice of a girl barely in her twenty, sitting hunched over on a nearby bench. On the ground next to her feet lay an impressive pile of spent cigarette butts and judging by the paper hat and apron, she was the very sandwich counter girl who had left Sandra sandwichless.

"Nothing really matters," She added, blowing out a cloud of second-hand smoke.

The chatty local stepped aside, allowing the new customers to make their purchases, all the while holding her tongue; something the cashier did not.

A hand rolled cigarette hung from her mouth.

She lit it with her thumb.

    "..."

She watched the flame flicker and dance off the tip of her thumbnail for a few seconds, before snuffing it with a snap. Of course, it was only after the first drag, that she realized she hadn't checked for 'No Smoking' signs. Whoops. Not a consideration she had to make back home. Of course, the world outside the Woods was...

    "Magical."

Though compared to truck stops, she considered most things normal.

Time seemed to pool, in places like these. Stretch like a rubber band, before snapping forward with speed enough to disorient. Spend a night in one, and who knows how long you'd be. Though whether or not the place was truly magical, or simply the result of how disjointed from the rest of the world such places seemed to be, had never been something of a focused study on her part. Simply a thing to muse over while smoking.

    "..."

She'd finished her cigarette already. Another snap, and the butt vanished. Then the woman did, too. Appearing some dozen feet away, palms planted flat on the Truck Stop Diner's counter. "I'll take all the eggs and bacon you have." There was a pause.

    "I didn't stutter. Mhm. Thanks."
Yeah, but if you... man, we're getting into weird analogy territory, like if you disintegrated Superman's arms he wouldn't be able to go "fool! Little did you know that my arms and I are one and can be remade from me!" and will his arms back into being from pure nothingness. - Pendaran

Boris grabs his roller suitcase from the back of the bus and pulls it behind him. He exits the bus and looks up at a sign that reads Junction Stop.

The trip had been long. Boris dealt with a lot of issues traveling nosey drivers, carjackers, train robbers, security officers, etc.

Boris enters the building and looks around. Having been used to fine dining. The truck stop had nothing that Boris found appetizing. So he just goes up to the counter to see if he could get a glass of Ice Tea.

Note: Boris is wearing a classy Mafia suit. His hair, mustache, and goatee are well groom. His roller suitcase is black and looks expensive. He's carrying a fire axe in a sheath on his back.

Drumming her fingers over the pastel-clad figure of the fashion magazine, Suzie's smile thinned, rather uncomfortably. It was a rather simple question - casual, even - but it seemed as if her lipswere more straining to contain something from spilling out off of her decidedly stiff tongue.

    Oh dear.

Rather, the cashier seemed nice enough? The manner of clerks in this country was something she'd have to get used to.

"...come to visit a distant relation, like?" Her answer accented the last word, almost as if she wasn't quite sure herself. "Kind of a last-minute thing, had to make my own way here..."

"You'll have to wait for Nancy to get back from her break. She's really the only one qualified to cook anything here," The cashier stated, deciding he was going to ignore the fact he thought he saw a lit cigarette in her mouth.

"Lenny..." The chatty woman said to the main cashier, "That small one's gotta an axe..."

"Carla..." Lenny began, "We're in Texas. They passed that one open-carry law for swords a while back, so I'm not gonna bother him over an axe."

Boris looks at the main cashier." Yes, I would like a glass of ice tea, thank you," Boris said.

"Oh! You must be related to Mr. Joestar!" Carla began, the older lady's eyes lighting up excitement, "Leave her be Carla," Lenny retorted, "You can't be scaring away visitors with your incessant need to fuel your gossip." "Don't you be tellin' me what to do, you miserable old goat!" Carla snapped back, but it appeared the old man was used to such things as he promptly ignored her and turned back to Suzie, "Don't say things too loudly. We got reporters out here like vultures, they're almost as bad as Carla here."
