I did enjoy Waid's take on him in JLA Year One.
His talk with Aquaman who was on the pier trying to read English, telling him to learn German first as it makes it easier.
Just a really great quiet moment that has stuck with me.

I'm not sure I get that logic, but then again, I first learned English growing up and then in college took one course of German before switching over to Spanish to finish my foreign language requirement.

I'd say this as well. He was the bedrock of the team, emotionally and in powers. He wasn't just "the guy on the monitor" or "the psychic link person." He was shown as a powerhouse, but that wasn't his purpose on the team. He was respected by all and his humanity was emphasized more than his alien-ness.

May not be the actual first time it was used, but I remember J'onn using his being the sole surviving Martian as a boast in Smallville and being more impressed with the character than previously.
