Honestly? I think he was trying to emulate Ed Bruker. Bruker brought back one of the most revered characters in Captain America history and made him into a badass assassin with a cool name that people went crazy over in a good way.

Coates triedto do the same thing with Peggy Carter, a character that no one really cared about in the comics and maybe slightly moreso in the movies. He tried to give her a cool name(Dryad? WTF?), linked her to an organization of superspy women that no one knew existed or cared that they did(Sounds like The Crew) and tried to make Sharon Carter the real hero and gave her a suit of armor too(Sound familiar Midnight Angels?).

Meanwhile, Steve went to prison.

Yeah folks want a black person to make it but being black and woke is NOT enough. There has to be substance and a strong resume.

Dwayne McDuffie couldn't get Superman or Spider-Man as the main writer.

He had to do Milestone, Ben 10, Static Shock, Hellraiser, Justice League, Scooby Doo, David Letterman, 4 DC animated movies, Damage Control and more to get Justice League comic.

Priest took Black Panther and made him a seller. Took Deathstroke and made it a must read. Bought diversity to Vampirella and gave her a spinoff with black lead. With everything else he has done. He still could not get the BATMAN gig.

2 badly done books gets Coates Superman. That is the frustration many have. It's NOT an attack on Coates. It's a commentary on those who HIRE.

If you needed a black writer I can list 20.

But we have to stop rewarding bad writing. Something this industry has done too long. Because we are taught to care only about CHARACTER.
