Like a Red Dragon, The Phoenix shall Soar in 2024!
There is zero doubt that George Perez is one of the greatest comics artists of all time, however his master of detail often meant his costumes were, in the later years, quite over done. Donna is the prime example of too much, despite being done by a master. The later adaptation into the starfield jumpsuit was, pardon the pun, divine inspiration. Perfection for her character.
Can we say the same thing about her origin? With a mirror twin, Dark Angel, multiple lives, Titan seeds, space gods...much, much overdone, methinks.
Now, about that appreciation...
I think Donna was once a marvelously simple creation, in the classic superhero comic tradition, ..which should have been left, as she was. She's rescued, from disaster and certain death, by Wonder Woman, as an infant, and, through adoption into her family, the legendary Amazons, ..becomes a Wonder Girl! It's such a bright, whimsical fantasy! Donna's story never needed to be a gritty graphic novel, and my most beloved 80s scribe, Marv Wolfman, just take the lion's share of the blame for this.
"Who Is Donna Troy?" would have made one helluva'n Elseworlds story.
I wouldn't say she's ruined, but...
