2005: Wonder Woman vs. Superman

Nothing weighs heavier on the soul of a superhero than when they have to fight their friends. In Wonder Woman #219, a tie-in to Infinite Crisis, Maxwell Lord made this nightmare a reality with his final power play: using his mind-control abilities to use Superman as his personal puppet.

Rucka spends the final issues of his first run on Wonder Woman extolling the depths of Diana and Clark’s friendship. He shows just how painful it is for Diana to be the only one who can stand in his way when he’s turned into an instrument of evil. And in doing so, he shows us exactly how Diana came to the most controversial decision she’s ever made, ending the battle and saving Superman the only way the manipulative Maxwell Lord afforded her: by killing him instead. For Diana, it was a sacrifice far greater than her sight. To win this battle, Wonder Woman was forced to give up her heart.

He won't never be fully replaced, but so far, he has been sidelined, and lost his main book.

Sadly, DC gave up on modernize the character. But WB on the other hand... well, Coates/Abrams' SM is not going to be Donner/Byrne take for sure.

The only character that can be modernized is Batman.

I still don’t understand the “given up” part when the current status quo was suppose to be what basically everyone and their grear great grandpas wanted.

This is so blatant... and unfair.

It’s weird and just makes the company seem eve more incompetent and counterproductive

Looking at the increasing amount of out-of-continuity books that DC is producing lately, it makes me think they'll end up moving away from the "main canon" sooner or later. 🤔

This is good because main continuity is messy to a point of no return and no clear direction. It’s like throwing stuff to the wall and seeing if it sticks as well as the cherry picking nonsense that just makes no sense and everything just seems empty.

The synergy and limitations set has really hurt.

The "worst" aspect of Byrne's take isn't the change itself but how it's treated as dogmatic decades later and retroactively made how SM has always been, and you be damned if you think otherwise.

Lol Superman wasn’t created by Byrne. And this weird mental gymnastics of trying to force this problematic take has neutered the character long term.

Yeah the whole you not a fan if you don’t praise this version aged like milk as well as the version itself.

A-Ko has recently been remastered. But I’m hoping for a revival. Update to adapting more of the comic which was more blantant of Clark and Diana’s reveal as her parents.

I miss Tony’s art. I miss Soule’s writing. Soule’s story wasn’t done and it would’ve been interesting to read his Wonder Woman centric arc. It won’t happen but wishful thinking Soule could come back to finish his story.

I guess so. I got to the point to believe that the only way DC has to fix its convoluted continuity is to drop it entirely. Too many "events" that were supposed to make sense of DC history just made it worse.

I get when it come from people that never read SM prior COIE, but folks that worked on SM in the 90s just know better as they grew up with Silver Age Supes.

I recall one of them didn't understand why Diana used to call SM "Kal", saying it was kinda mean from her. 🤨
