Talking 150 Movies in 2021 Challenge!

    As Per the Tradition of This Now Yearly Challenge from Past Years to Help Motivate Us to Expericene More Cinema in our Lives;

We Offically Begin the 2021 Movie Challenge Thread!

The Previous Year for 200 Movies in 2020 was a true Challenge and I was please so Many where able to participate in it!

But having such a year as we did in 2020 and the 200 Movie challenge feeling abit overwelming, I felt we needed to back-up to help make 2021 a more relaxing year and 150 feels more right both as a good challenge but not to little or to much.

So Now as Per Always as in Past Challenges, The Challenge Simply is to Watch 150 Movies in Year of 2021 in the Time-Frame the Very Start of the Year to the Very End of the Year, Midnight to Midnight!

Da Rules are Noted Below, with 2 New Rules Added!

    Rules;

1.) It can be Any Movie so long as it fits what mostly IS considered a movie, Length of a Movie usually is at least around an hour or more.

2.) Their are Unique exceptions like Anime Movies, some of them can be shorter the an hour, but if they hit around 30 mins or more that is questionable, but I will let you be the judge of that.

3.) Also shows that feature movies Like Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes I will count since those mostly feature full length movies.

    NEW RULE!
3-A.)Documentaries will be included as well as long as they are in the movie format. If any problems or concerns let me know.

4.) Try to watch the movie on a Legal~Formats, try to avoid not legal like pirating or any other format like that.

    NEW RULE!
4-A.)The ONLY OPINON in watching a movie Final Choice!

Piracy is not allowed, but many Older and Rarer movies I have found VERY Hard to come by them either by VHS, DVD or Streaming services. These more obsure movies have YET been found fully posted on places like You-Tube and others Video services by users. Now I still encourage the other Traditional formats as the main opinions to support the movie industry, but if their are some of these Very Hard to find movies you want to watch but can only see them in those uploade formats, That will be considered that ok, but only as a last resort. If the studios that made them seem not care they are their and don't care to make DVD's or VHS's of them, then I would not worry to much over it.

5.) You can give us to the format you watch the movie on if you like as well on you listings. It is Encouraged also to Post your lists of what you have watch so far ever now and again if you feel like. Also Feel Free to share your Reviews and Thoughts of your movies, those are a Joy for Many to read!

6.) It is NOT~150-DIFFERENT Movies either ~~~ If you decide to Watch the same movie several times then that counts as well, number of times you seen a movie counts to the overall total. So if you seen the same movie 3x's during the challenge time period, then that is 3 to your total. We all gain new expericance when seeing a Movie more then once, it is very enriching.

7.) You can go OVER 150 if you like, its 150 At Minimum or more to complete the challenge.

8.) You have to see the majority length of the movie you are watching. Mostly around 90% of it, counting off around 10% for times like when we are in theaters and have to take bathroom breaks or step out for a moment, things like that.

9.) We ALL have Busy Lives and Responsiblities, so if You are Watching a Movie and have to stop and come back to later and pick up where you left off that Counts and Always counts, it is about seeing the Majority Whole of the Movie, so don't worry about if you have to start and pick-up later, that is just Life.

10.) If Anyone has any concerns or questions about Da Rules or things that should be added that will be ok, just make a post and I will go over it, I will edit as we go along that sound like good suggestion.

11.) The Contest Begins at the stroke of Midnight of the start of 2021 and will end when 2021 officially ends at the stroke of Midnight to start 2022!

12.) If you are Watching a Movie on December 31st 2021 and watch at least a good majority by the time 2022 hits and just have alittle left, that can still count, just it can't be starting it right when 2022 is about to hit.

13.) Overall Have Fun & Enjoy!

Years ago, another message board I was on had some occasional month-long "30 movies in 30 days" challenges, and one thing they also did was to have various sub-challenges. It was often open-ended stuff like five films with the same actor, or ten films you haven't seen in a decade, or five films from a particular best of list.

That might be worth doing here, to shake things up a little. Of course, what's a challenge for one person might not be meaningful, interesting or possible to another, so these would be completely voluntary. Someone who likes more recent commercial movies might think it's a big deal to watch five black& white movies, while that would be something I would likely already do. More specific challenges (five films from a screenwriter of your choice! five foreign-language films from the same genre! five films covered in a collection of criticism!) are pretty easy for someone with a good Blu-ray collection and/ or access to multiple streaming services or actual libraries, but might be harder for someone with a smaller collection. Someone who doesn't like older film aesthetics would be put off by a watch five movies made before 1960 challenge, or someone who is tired of watching prestige films from 2020 might not care for an April challenge of watching Oscar nominees.

It can still be a way to expose yourself to new and interesting material, and to develop a better appreciation for something (a genre, director, etc.)

Does anyone have any ideas for a good sub-challenge for January?
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

Namor the Sub-Mariner, Marvel's oldest character, will have been published for 85 years in 2024. So where's my GOOD Namor anniversary ongoing, Marvel?

I'm not participating in sub-challenges, not because I'm a party pooper, but because if I do, it is going to feel like a chore to me.
I also prefer Series over films and watch movies when I run out of Series. Sorry.

That being said, I'd love to see these sub-challenges tackled by bigger movie enthusiasts than myself.
After just recently watching Tenet I even have an idea for the first sub-challenge (if that's OK).

    MOVIES THAT MADE YOU THINK

As I watched Tenet I was impressed by the non-stop romantic comedy style dialog (You know, practically finishing each other's sentences). What a gallop of expressions!
But as distracting as that was it's the task of making sense of what I just saw after the movie was done that inspired this idea for the sub-challenge. I mean it was a sci-fi movie. They made up all the rules and so far I'm on board with it, but when I started applying those rules to what I just saw on the screen the seems of common sense started to unravel. Eventually, I gave up after a few attempts to connect the dots, but "they" can say: "Ha, we made you think!" As you can see the "thinking" doesn't necessarily need to be positive, but in a world where I prefer and seek out movies whose only task is to entertain me for the length of their feature, occasionally I come across a film that requires more investment on my side.
What can I say, happens to the best of us.

So there it is if you will a possible sub-challenge.
A nice addition would be to tell us what your thoughts were after watching the movie.
Not a review, not a synopsis, but your own thoughts inspired by the movie.

That's an interesting idea. I'm down for it.

Last year, there was some 30 day challenge circulating film twitter, and Day 13 was kind of similar.

At the time, I struggled to pick something that put me in deep thoughts (which is a slightly different category.) There are a few, but even when I appreciate a movie on an intellectual level, it doesn't always put me in deep thoughts. At the time I went with the documentary Best of Enemies, about the 1968 debates between Gore Vidal and William F Buckley Jr, which didn't delve seriously into the policy arguments, but it does get into some big process arguments, which I've always been interested in.

This is an interesting challenge in that you're generally limited to films you've seen before. I won't know, for instance, if Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, makes me think until I've seen it. But it is an excuse to see films that I had found meaningful before.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

There are a few, but even when I appreciate a movie on an intellectual level, it doesn't always put me in deep thoughts.

Yes. It would be a trip down memory lane.

A challenge that makes me watch films that I hate? Way to turn something fun into a hard slog. And as someone with clinical depression, I have no desire to watch a film that puts me in depression.

    Not for me.

Obviously there's no obligation to participate.

I do want to note that films that make you think don't have to be depressing. It can be life-affirming. Or the things that you think about might be more technical (Who was telling the truth in Rashomon? What will happen next in the Truman Show? Is Silver Linings Playbook accurate in its description of mental illness? What should be done about the financial problems illustrated in The Big Short? How did small decisions have a big impact in Amelie?) than depressing.

But I can appreciate a preference for pure escapism.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

Day 14 literally says "A film that gave you depression".

Like I said in a previous post suggestions on how to mix up and add to the contest are always encouraged. But it is to each posters choose to use them or not and to keep it as respected as that as a formality to the contest we enjoy.

Let’s keep it at that and enjoy the contest while we take ideas on how to make it the best for each of us while understanding not all roads are for all.

    Thank You all.

One potential thought: a sub-challenge of films by five black directors for Black History Month (looking at African-American directors excludes African directors or British directors like Steve McQueen.)

That picture was posted because another day was similar to a suggestion about thought-provoking movies.

It is a bit different to watch one example of one type of movie than several. A few depressing films over a month is going to make people sad in a way than picking movies that put them in different moods will not. And with one film, you can pick something that is satisfying as well as sad. Though I can understand a desire to avoid even that, or a preference to not rewatch those kinds of movies.

But yeah, I certainly wouldn't recommend any sub-challenge on multiple depressing movies.

I do like the occasional challenge. I did one for October last year and it made things a lot of fun. Plus it made it easier on my wife who hates horror movies to feel like it was a goal to accomplish. The only problem I have with the 30 Day Challenge you posted, Mets is that it favors re-watches, which is something I'm trying to steer away from.

As for my Subgoals this year I want to watch at least 100 new movies movies and I want at least 25 of those to be foreign films. I also want to finish my watch through of the AFI Top 100 list, which was a goal last year, but school led me to not want to do things that felt like extra work.

I have watched two so far. As with last year, a star is going to indicate it as a re-watch:

    1) La Haine (1995) - This movie was devastating. Super relevant, even though it's 25 years old. It's one of those movies where I knew exactly where it was going to end, yet when it got to that ending, I was still surprised when it got there. [Criterion Channel]
    2) City Lights (1931)* - Absolute Classic. One of the most human movies I've ever seen and it's themes of longing for human connection at any cost is as powerful today as it ever as been. [Criterion Channel]
