I heard good reviews about Cullen Bunn's Sinestro.

It's amazing the amount of investment DC does for its villains. They get to headline thier own titles and star inthier own movies.

Do yourself a favor and track that series down (singles are probably easier, as the trades are OOP). After Johns, Bunn is the best writer to happen to Sinestro imho...

That was Marz's version of the origin, yes. He also murdered the Lantern to get his ring, which kinda defeats the purpose of his character arc, but Marz wasn't exactly the most subtle of writer back then.

Credit where credit is due, Venditti's GL run may have started out as hot garbage with the immediate Post-Johns and awful DCYou era, I will always give him props for course correcting nicely with the opening and closing storyarcs of HJ&GLCorps, even if the middle was largely bland filler.

It should. I really can't stand when villains are retconned to always have been bad-- kind of like when Harley's start of darkness wasn't when she got her mind broken by The Joker, but she was instead always a bad person. She becomes less sympathetic. Likewise, Sinestro's fall from grace doesn't really matter if he was never struggling with the morality of killing to achieve his own ends. He had to be the paragon before he could have a reputation to tarnish, you know?

Even though he knows how hard the road back is, Hal still didn't do all of those things consciously. Sinestro on the other hand did everything on his own accord, without being "possessed" or going through trauma after failing to save his hometown. Not only that but he was the one who directed Parallax towards Hal in the first place. So for Hal to still be this forgiving of him, he must still see him as his old mentor to a degree, rather than as the guy who's done every awful thing there is to do under the sun.

I think that's always been the crux of it (sorry Anthony Shaw). A part of him still sees, or wants to see, Sinestro as the man he remembers, not the man he is now.
