Fun fan theories... but the legit reason would probably be that the rings never looked for a replacement. Abin Sur always sent his energy beam out to find a suitable replacement because he knew he was dying... It wasn't an automatic thing. At least not till Johns took over in 2004. That was one of the things he added in, but before that there was always the threat that whoever killed a GL would get their hand on the ring... unless a Guardian took it in their own hands to get it back or destroy it. It didn't fly off on it's own. But yeah, since Red Son came out in 2003 so that was pre-Johns mythology.

And somehow Mogo helps the rings find worthy candidates?

Any references? There's been a lot of writers and I have a lot of holes in my collection, but I really don't remember that ever happening before. I remember the ring wielder willing it to get help Like Hal did when he sent the ring to Superman in Action comics weekly, or find replacements while they were still dying ala Tomar Re and Abin Sur... but I don't remember ever seeing a GL drop and the ring just ditching his corpse on it's own. Didn't happen in Emerald twilight or the Crisis.. never had a chance in Kyle's run...

Maybe when Hal slipped in the shower and it was sent to John, but i have a feeling that was a pre-programmed thing..

Like i said, i have a lot of holes, so i'm curious where Johns got that from.... because i didn't see it till his run.
