Ares isn't tied up. Marston would be so disappointed.
I don't care what people say, and I think this might be a controversial opinion...but I am not exactly thrilled about Ares, an evil character being embodied by a trope so associated with a subsegment of the gay male community [and yeah, yeah...I know that some people find him more complexly amoral than evil, but I still think it is problematic to have a character that is widely known as a villain, a bad guy, a war-mongering killer and the comic book-and-now-movie personification of Wonder Woman's main enemy drawn as pretty much a Tom of Finland leatherman]. Just my opinion. I am glad that the blue armor with horns and the pitch black face with blood-red eyes has lasted this long; this is part of how you brand a fictional character, visual consistency. Too bad that the film did not integrate that design into the cinematic Ares. Instead they went for the most underwhelmingly uncinematic Ares ever.

Well they still had Ares in the Armor sometimes. Just not all the time.

He looks like Spike from Buffy if he started drinking protein shakes.
Man, I wish they just used that look for the 3rd act. I know him getting armor and all was a decision pushed by WB at the last minute, but I wonder why they couldn't just have him in that look. (Or you know, just not have his face showing in the armor.)

Nothing says Greek God like an Aryan in black leather and automatic rifles.
Hey, wait a goddamn minute!
Never liked this look for Ares. He doesn't really look imposing in any fashion which is pretty baffling for the god of war.
Even if you wanted to do more of a mastermind add opposed to warrior motif, it just doesn't offer much. He looks more like a Nazi going clubbing than the metaphysical manifestation of armed conflict.
I do prefer Ares with his Perez look but I didn't mind the idea since some Ancient Greek depictions of Ares were as a pretty boy (though yes, like you say he doesn't really look "Greek") but it does have a rather "2000s CW villain vibe to it".
Circe had a similar redesign which is one I can't say I cared for.
( Though I'm sure all the leather on Circe and Ares doing Marston proud)
