I like Bendis more than most it seems (though I haven't read much of his work to be fair) so guess it will be interesting to see what he does since I don't think he's ever really done a WW-like character.

Sounds like Historia will be a big chunk of this, though I guess we'll see if they'll go with her being the daughter of Ares.

Seems we are likely getting the Well of Souls sequence, and I still have no idea how that resulted in Hippolyta and Antiope being actual sisters while the other Amazons weren't. Unless we are meant to assume the cavewoman she was reincarnated from had a sister who died at a man's hand, and that soul became Antiope?

Same if they extend it to Menalippe and Penthesilea. I always thought having them be Ares's demigod daughters and turning away from him was always more interesting than reincarnation.

That or Ares banged a very attractive cavewoman in his younger days that led to Hippolyta and Antiope.

I've thought the same as you with just making them Ares' daughters who turn away from him. Plus it gives DC a link to that pantheon family drama without reducing Diana to a daughter of Zeus.

It is weird that Hippolyta became Queen just because she was the first to swim to the surface in the Perez version.

"You can't expect to be Queen just because you won a swimming contest! Supreme Executive power is derived from a mandate from the masses not from some farcical aquatic ceremony!"

    Great minds think alike. :P

In my outline, her previous mortal life was as the daughter of Ares and her biological sisters Antiope, Penthiselia and Menalippe. She rejects Ares and rebels against her mother to try and reform the early Amazons. Then after her 'death', she is chosen by Athena and Aphrodite to be a part of their new race of warrior women and to protect Doom's Doorway. One of her biological sisters join the Amazons while the others form their own tribe(s). Nubia would have been a part of one of these tribes. I considered making her Hippolyta's niece or grand niece but but Nubia as Diana's twin sister is what's resonating with the audience.

I also prefer Hippolyta and her sisters as daughters of Ares. It just sounds like a far more compelling (and feminist) story if the Amazons decide to follow the path of love and peace on their own volition rather than just being told to by the gods. Maybe scratch the mass rape thing too.

A Hippolyta movie would allow writers to flesh out these elements and give it the time and attention needed to make the audience care for it.
Well going by the film continuity, many of those things didn't happen. So unless they completely reboot the film continuity....

JL 500.jpgI don't see the sandals of hermes so i'll guess they'll explain her power of flight in future issues.

It's Bendis. So don't hold your breath for an explanation.

I'm not talking about the films.

If after all these years we still don't have an explanation for Artemis being as strong as she is, I don't see much chance of them ever explaining Hippolyta. This will just be added to the general inconsistency of Amazons having powers except when writers decide they don't.

Maybe Hippolyta and Artemis just works out more.

"If you follow this Amazon regiment you too can lift 20 more tons and not end up as fodder in the next battle on Themyscira."

But the post was about a Queen Hippolyta movie working or not, right? So my response stands, as unless they reboot the current film continuity, some of that stuff never happened in the film continuity.

The poster asked whether a Hippolyta movie could work. They didn't specify whether it was a movie set in the film continuity or not. I agree that these ideas wouldn't work if it were the film continuity but I wasn't thinking of a Hippolyta movie set in the film continuity. Plus I think everyone is enamored by the 'daughter of Ares' idea since it was first brought up either in this thread or one of the other threads.

She's Wonder Woman's mom so she has powers. That's 100% the reason she's flying. Don't expect anything else.
