I agree, with the exception of JLD, her animated appearances have been good.

She needs a writer to do for her what Dixon/Simone did for Black Canary or what KSD did for Carol Danvers. I feel like all the pieces are there for something great and somebody just needs to realize them.

I don't mind if they deal with it once. It's just the fact that they keep revisiting that well that's the problem. At this point she's reunited with her 'dead' father more times than some living people have met theirs.

A lot of writers are just retreading 'Zatanna's Search', they are not doing anything with the stories that came afterward.

    spoilers:
"Oh no! Constantine! Save me!" Bleh. I remember a time when she was creative and resourceful even while powerless and cornered.
    end of spoilers
Yeah, it's awful how Zatanna is almost always just Consantine plus one and it's really strange because from the pre-52 books I've read with her she was always shown as independent and powerful, like what happened there?

What would be some good Zatanna books to start with?

The Zatanna by Paul Dini trade that collects his one shot, Everyday Magic, and the rest of his run is probably as good a place as any.

I'd also recommend the Tynion/Ram V JLD run.

Thanks a lot! I'll look for those.

I've only seen a bit of her, so I'm wondering: what are her powers?

Basically, she says something backwards, it happens.

Yes, Paul Dini's Zatanna is absolutely fabulous...remains one of my favourite runs, start here.

Dini of course is best known as the legendary writer for the Batman the Animated Series, he writes the first 10 to 12 issue of this short lived series.

In addition to her solo series and Everyday Magic, I would also like to add:

Seven Soldiers mini series by Grant Morrison
Zatanna: Come Together mini series by Lee Mars and Esteben Maroto
Tynion's 'Witching Hour' arc in JLD 2018
    Zatanna/Black Canary: Bloodspell
Justice League Vol 1 #161-165 (covers her joining the JL, meeting her mother and the expansion of her backstory)
Swamp Thing Vol 2 #50 (not a Zatanna story but she is in it and this is where Zatara dies)
Heart of Hush and House of Hush (not a Zatanna story but it explores her father's relationship with Thomas Wayne)

Don't forget to check out my favourite story.

A 12 page short in "New Talent Showcase 2018"

Zatanna Search, the world first Crossover event is very good start of her story.
    Then
    Adventure Comic 413 to 421
    Supergirl Volume 1 issue 1-4 and 7
Book of Magic by Neil Gaiman
Justice 2005 by Alex Ross, good story and great art. Good for her basic information
    World Finest 207 and 208
JLA from issue 160 onward, it has some of the best belove Satelite Era like issue 200. Justice League Detroit isn't so good but I love Zatanna journey at Godhead.
Justice League Dark first and Second Volume.
Justice League of America 2006 from issues 20 to 40
    Reign in Hell event
    Day of Judgment event

Yeah, my quibbles aside, JLD was a better read than League of Bendis.

Pepperridge Farm remembers when Zee was resourceful and creative enough to escape even without her powers:

    Attachment 107442

    Attachment 107443
Seeing this I like if they could showcase her escape artist skill in use. Lock pick hidden on shirt, enchanted fingernails, straitjacket escape or Houdini skills. Speaking of powers, using some magical items stored on Shadowcrest wouldn't hurt
