I think the change in writers for JLD caused a few plot lines to be left unanswered.

Why did Zatara hide his plan from his own daughter?

Here is how the events played out in the original Swamp Thing book:

Constantine recruiting the Zatara's for the seance:

He wants them both so it's implied that he is playing on Giovanni's protectiveness over his daughter so he would come along as well. Through out the issue Constantine was tricking various magic users into participating in the seance. How much Zee was in on getting Giovanni to join in is unclear.

NGL, Books of Magic is my least favorite depiction of Zatanna.

Gaiman writes Zatanna almost like a nagging girlfriend and gives her the idiot ball so she can take Tim Hunter, a kid whom she knows is being targeted by magical entities, into a party of full of magical beings, fully knowing that there were bad guys there too:
