They were included in that plot, along with Wasp and Falcon (who both also later joined the team), because Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Cyclops were all unavailable (Nova was stuck in space, Cyclops was with his other team, the All-New X-Men, and Ms. Marvel was with the Secret Warriors).

I've been wondering aloud for like 2yrs, he should have been the undisputed leader from the beginning. The hamfisting of baby cyclops was disgusting to me.

I wouldn't say he was hamfisted, Cyke's being a candidate for leader started out as a joke from Sam to rile things up between Amadeus and Kamla's bid to be leader and the very next issue Scott defaulted to Kamala being leader anyway.

I don't think writers or marvel like the idea of Spider-Man leading a team of non-spider people. For some numbers reasons....

Nova did have a point, Scott was already the leader of the X-Men back in his own time. But of course his loyalties would've been divided since he did still have his X-Men team with him, and he knew they'd have to go home at some point (which is the reason he quit the team at the end of Waid's run - after making sure he had a replacement in the form of Ironheart and Wasp). The team was Kamala's idea, it's no surprise she ended up as leader. But she IS starting to doubt herself now. The last couple of issues showed that the others see her as a mastermind... and she's not confident that she is. That's much closer to her solo portrayal, which does not show her as a confident strategist. Instead she just strives to do her best and relies on her friends to help her come up with plans.
