I know a lot of people fan cast Tom Cruise as Hal because they think Hal is basically Maverick from Top Gun with a magic ring and flying through space but I never saw it. They are similar but I think there is a crucial difference between the two that I can't quite put my finger on.

I don't usually compare Hal to the Top Gun guys either, but Geoff Johns certainly saw him that way. Personal opinions on Cruise being too old and too short for that role aside, you just don't want someone like him in a superhero movie. He'd just take over the entire production and call the shots cause otherwise he won't accept the role. The only "superhero" he should keep playing is Ethan Hunt and let's just leave it at that.

I wouldn't want Tom Cruise as Hal - he'd end up playing Tom Cruise and Hal would get lost.
