I found it funny Impala called her American...made me wonder how long has she lived in the states?

It's rare but not that uncommon for Europeans to call Americans anyone from the Americas. We don't do it all the time because the Estadounidenses word doesn't really exist in most languages so we do call US citizens Americans. Maybe it's the same for Impala : you're born in the Americas and you live there for long, you're an American.

I know for sure that the latter happened historically in France, especially about the slave-owners of our Caribeban Colonies and French Guyana who were called Americans when they came back to metropolitan France.

This is intentional. Mari speaks and acts as if she is an American. Due to her upbringing, she has no African accent. There's no reason for Impala to think she's anything but.

I do wonder what Vixen meant by limited access to her powers without her totem. I guessing her powers are more like Animal Man and have a certain range without the totem. From what I've read, Vixen has always had her powers/connection to the Red...well Pre52. As she spoke about her mother screaming when she first saw Mari fly. There, so much back story we dont know about Mari.

You saw how amped she got when Mist suggested she needed to sit the rest of the adventure out.

Her flash of anger is outside her normal, fairly even-toned, temperament.

If we get to do a series we will be delving deeply into exactly what Mari's powers are and how they actually work. I'm not a believer in power without consequence and Mari has some things she has to juggle (in my mind) in terms of the downside of what she can do.

It's not that her access is limited to what animals she CAN use but more which ones she SHOULD access without the Tantu Totem.

Some new concepts are getting introduced in this story and all the dominoes haven't fallen yet. Not even close.

just read #3 and this has easily been my favorite Vixen story. i don't think I've ever heard of Olympian but I really dig that character's design, all the character designs were really solid. my biggest gripe is how short it is, I would love to see all of these ideas expanded more. this definitely is the best foundation for a wider Vixen mythology DC's put out, but they kinda hoed with this BS cropping. they should've promoted this heavier, it's always refreshing reading about someone other than Batman or the Justice League. Redjack and the crew really came through, I hope this gets a full run down the line.
