What went wrong with the original series? At one point the book as so popular that Marvel were thinking of expanding the Warriors into 2 teams with 2 Warrior books being released each month. What happened that made them drop in popularity and get cancelled?

That's a good question. I'd personally blame it on the aftershocks from "The Great Comics Crash of 1996," when the speculator bubble (finally) burst, though that would just be my theory.

There was also big editorial shakeups. Each franchise had it's own office. Avengers, X-Men, cosmic books, Marvel Knights, etc. There was no clean place for New Warriors, so it was placed in the Spidey office, with Spider-Man (Ben Reilly) added to the team. The Nova and Night Thrasher solos were cancelled. That was the beginning of the end.

Ben was still Scarlet Spider at the time he was added to the New Warriors, and when the whole business with the Cyber Scarlet Spider wrecked his reputation in that identity . . . well, he went and became Spider-Man and aside from helping the New Warriors take down Cyber-Scarlet, he never really joined or interacted with them again.

Oh yes I remember this happening. So because Marvel didn't have a proper home for the Warriors, editorial didn't know what to do with them? And this caused their collapse?

Pretty much, yeah. Avengers and Fantastic Four could be farmed off to Image because they weren't that popular then compared to Spider-Man and the X-Men, but New Warriors was rather nebulous in terms of its position within the greater whole of Marvel.

Yeesh, talk about a lack of imagination.

With the FF and Avengers 'dead', they could have raised the Warriors' profile and given them an interesting status quo. Instead, they were reduced to guest appearances

Agreed. The New Warriors stepping up in place of the Avengers, and possibly rivaling the Thunderbolts after Night Thrasher started suspecting their true identities as the Masters (of Evil), would have been a great dynamic for them.

Man, that's just sad. It hurts even more when you consider who was writing T-Bolts at the time.

Due to it being a marketing ploy, rather than a a true creative story move, the Heroes Reborn Marvel Universe era did have a lot of missed opportunities. You really think that the surviving Avengers, and there were still quite a few around, would not have reorganized the team with a fresh membership? Other established heroes could have teamed together in new teams (maybe a reformed Force Works on the West Coast?). The New Warrios being sidelined was just another wasted opportunity.

    Peace

What were the Warriors' sales number, at the time? Does anyone know?

I remember hearing plans about a reboot, dropping the 'New' and just calling it Warriors (which itself ran into trouble because of Guy Gardner's series at the time). Nova was gonna be transformed into a space knight, and a few other things.

Hell, wasn't Marvel still in bankruptcy at the time? Might explain why they didn't take many chances.

    May 1995:
That's the month immediately before Scarlet Spider joined the team. Unfortunately Comichron has a big gap after that, as that's when Marvel bought Heroes World. It's September 1996 before they have a combined chart, and NW is gone by then, as it only ran for 14 more issues and the gap is 15 months.

Interestingly, it was selling more copies than New Titans, but New Titans was making more money because of a higher cover price! New Titans was actually cancelled and replaced by a new Teen Titans at around the same time New Warriors was axed.

And since Guy Gardner Warrior was mentioned, it's worth noting that New Warriors was outselling that as well, but again, was making less money.

So I decided to bite the bullet and ask Marvel's subscription department if the New Warriors mini-series was still happening and the department said Marvel still hasn't made a decision. So strange.

Anyway, I've been reading through the first volume, and Fabian Nicieza does not give these kids a break. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since it's a 90s comic book. I'm at issue 36 or 37 and it's like yikes on what is happening to their families. It keeps me reading though.
