It basically results in the villains not having any teeth.
I think there was more than a single casualty in Rebels, unless we're talking of the main cast, but I enjoyed the villains a lot in Clone Wars and Rebels so I never particularly felt the main ones didn't have teeth even if the grunts weren't that effective.

The first couple of minutes of Star Wars has Stormtroopers mowing down rebels, and stunning Leia.

They just never kill the main characters, like in most franchises.

Funny thing is ROTJ, the Stormtroopers manage to hit both R2 and Leia, although in both cases they're trying to get the bunker door open and get distracted. 3PO is also badly damaged in ESB.

Luke and Chewie also get hit by Jabba's gang, and Luke never seems to bother to fix his damaged mechanical hand. He just wears a glove over it, one that he still has in The Mandalorian, and by the time of Ben's fall doesn't even bother with the glove or the fake flesh. (Although the Luke illusion from TLJ does have a brown glove)

I think that sums up the real world reasons.

Some captions I did for FB a while back. The Dark Side of the Force made me do it.

First one kind of reminds me a bit of the Kylo Ren/"Matt" SNL skit.

Stormtroopers can't shoot straight because of bad writing. You ever see a World War II movie? In a good one, you don't know who is going to die. You don't have heroes wading into battle killing hordes of enemy soldiers that can't shoot straight. You need to have a bunch of disposable characters to keep the audience guess about who us going to die, you don't get that sense from watching a Star Wars Movie, Stormtroopers wear masks and helmets to keep them as faceless cannon fodder.

It’s the interest of movies or TV shows with a lot of main protagonists: we don’t identify ourselves with one character who, we know, isn’t (usually) going to die…

It annoys me, too: the masked enemies… It gives the impression you don’t shoot real people but some robots.
It gives to heroes an easy moral ascendancy: we are good because we look human, they are bad because they look like machines (and you can’t kill machines). Except that, under the armor, they are human. It’s because of that I like very much the thing with Finn.

The same thing does happen in Star Trek, but they always got a few red shirts to get hit and when main characters do get shot, they got space magic to heal them.

Finn's a bit different from the OT Stormtroopers though; while the PT ones are clones and the OT ones are recruits, the ST ones like Finn are pretty much trained and indoctrinated from a young age (Pretty much a warped version of the Jedi's procedure). I think it's implied that the few that defected like Finn and Jannah were able to do so with the force guiding them to do the right thing.

You wouldn't shoot straight either with that kind of helmet on your head.

The whole armor is ridiculous anyway. Heavy, clumsy, pointless apparently as you can one shot them just the same and it turns you into a quite visible and easy to shoot at target.

+1 for the style, -1000 for everything else.

Plus, it must be a mess tactically speaking. How do you even recognize the dudes from you own units? Can't be practical.

Rebels now? You can see the faces of your pals, thank you very much, lighty armored for faster movements, they can aim without killing their own neck cause of a stupid helm and they don't wear flashy colors.

    GG.

Yeah in ROTS pretty much all the troopers had different armor colors mixed with the white per unit. Obi-Wan's for example was Orange, Anakin/Vader's blue, Palpatine's red etc.

Speaking of which, the shoulder pauldrons seem to have different explanations for what they're for depending on the source (even with Disney). First off they were just the sandtroopers in the OT, but both the PT and ST used the pauldrons with non-sandtroopers.

I always thought it was for sergeant or something. Maybe it's from something in the old canon though, it's hard to keep track.

Stormtroopers will use this to identify rank.
In ANH the pauldron is used for sandtroopers of various rank as not all troopers in the docking bay scene possess a pauldron. It's a common misconception that all sandies use pauldrons when not all of them use it and not all of them even use orange. ANH gunners aboard the Death Star also wear a pauldron but it is the black pauldron prop reused to create the body armor of the trooper.

For Rogue One the pauldron was used on the Jedha Sandtroopers but works under the other misconception that sandtroopers wore the stormtrooper kit (the costumes are different).

The Deathtroopers within the same film use black pauldrons to identify specialists.

The First Order would use Disney's ranking system.

Spinoff material like Fallen Order would give certain troopers pauldrons to identify them to the player. Pauldrons however are not consistent across depictions (let alone armor) and so we can just assume those troops held that rank and due to limitations of the game is just how they appear to the player. Basically not all heavy wear black.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this but the pauldrons on clones are kind of odd.

Ranked troopers will use it but color isn't a designation of rank, merely the presence of a pauldron is. The colors on the phase 1 actually had been the designation of rank though this is discarded for ROTS and for the better part of TCW (the series does portray at least one instance of the old rank system). Collectively they have 5-6 variants with no indication of what rank those clones are just that they hold rank. And while it could just be specialization it's also weirder that not all clones who are in those specializations use the pauldron so it has to be some choice. The clones are just kind of all over the place.
