While I get what you mean by helmets being more a Steve thing, I've always had an issue with the head piece. Though to be fair, Immonen's art made it look half decent.

Warren Ellis made it work in the context of the Ultimates universe. The movies were clearly influenced by this depiction, since I don't know any other versions of Sam that use submachine guns.
Ellis also gave Sam a scientific pedigree, which was cool.
