Older superheroes seems to be the trending a little nowadays.
Look at Ryan Reynolds, Chris Platt, Ben Affleck and RDJ. Even actors (Hemsworth, Evans and others) who started young as superheroes has aged into older superheroes.
This year we will see a 40 year old Aquarman and next year a 39 year old Shazam, so a 39 or 40 year old Gambit isn’t an issue.

I think older actors bring more credibility to the character.
One of the mistakes the XMen franchise made was to scrap the older cast with a mostly younger school age cast.

I think it is frozen and they are waiting for Disney takeover. Which I am sure will kill this movie if it isn't dead yet.

Sometimes I feel like they don't want to announce that this movie is cancelled until Disney takes over, so that they can blame it all on the mouse. "See, we totally were going to make this, but they cancelled it."
