Default The Greatest War Film or Films

For me the best war or greatest war film ever made is Saving Private Ryan (1998). After constant rewatch, I think it is Steven Spielberg's best film, Also when does Tom Hanks not deliver?

My other best or personal greats will be

    The Guns of Naravone (1961)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
    Glory (1989)

I also like some modern new ones from the 2000s

    Inglorious Bastards (2009)
    1917 (2019)

Cassablanca was way too romantic, the romance overshadowed the war aspect but it definitely could be on the list. I will also add 12'O Clock High (1949).

The Longest Day was also a classic.
And Kubrick's Paths of Glory is also great.
More recently, 1917 was a standout.

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Not many big war films now a days. But I sort of get it. I liked them growing up, but if you look at them as well made as many are they tell the same old stupid story of mankind over and over. The last one I watched was Dunkirk. Which was interesting. But as well made as it is, the basic story is the same, just idiocy.

Great list! My choice would be...

    Grave of the Fireflies
火垂るの墓 (1988) - Director: Isao Takahata

While their Are Many Great War Movies I have seen, The Longest Day (1962) was and still is one the All time Classic and Greats for me I always like to see!

Just the scale of the Movie alone had that level of Epical Movies during this era and one of the Biggest Casts of stars at that time to the best of their ablity at that time to tell the story of one of the most critical days in history.

The ones I'd re-watch would be
    Apocalypse Now
    Black hawk down
    Kingdom of heaven

No interest in Dunkirk or 1917

Controversial opinion: Apocalypse Now! is not a war film. Or at least, it's not by the end (the aerial cavalry scene is very obviously a great set-piece of the genre).

I'll always watch Patton: Lust For Glory, even though the guy was obviously a total dick.

Full Metal Jacket is better in the boot camp section than the actual war movie part, so also something of a begrudging selection. Funny to think all the ruined buildings at the end are in London's Isle Of Dogs before the redevelopment.

    Wonder Woman (2017)

What? I haven't watched much in the genre of war films.

Also, Starship Troopers actually is a war film despite being about an imaginary war, and will continue to resonate as long our government officials pull **** like posing with flags whenever they need to distract from the real issues they caused.

I tend to gravitate more towards movies that are decidedly Anti-War. Things like Full Metal Jacket or Paths of Glory. For example, I absolutely can't stand Saving Private Ryan. In fact, Saving Private Ryan is worse to me than some Pro-War movies. SPR is a war movie without any discernible perspective and seems to be more interested in mythologizing warfare than anything else.
