Unhappy Legion, DC artist Steve Lightle has passed away

I just saw this on Facebook.

Matthew Lightle, Steve's son, reported on his father's Facebook account that Steve had passed away from cardiac arrest this morning.

Terrible news. So sad to see.

You know, at the time, it felt like he drew the Legion for years. But in reality, it was a very short window.

Legion of Super Heroes #23 is one of my favorites from the Baxter books because Steve came back to draw it from a story idea that he had presented to Paul Levitz. I was hoping so badly that he was back for good but I believe that was his very last issue to do. Thankfully, he continued to draw covers of the book for some time after that.

He was one of the best. To follow Keith Giffen (even if Giffen's art had gone by the wayside by then) was a major task. But Steve did it brilliantly.

Here's a link to an interview with Steve if anyone is interested:

Not only do I still own all of Steve's Legion issues and cover issues, but I also still have the first issue of the Doom Patrol series he drew as well.

I was so sad to hear this. I loved his Legion work. Followed him on Facebook and he seemed like such a genuinely nice man. My thoughts are with his family.

It is a sad news. His work was what made me buy the Doom Patrol for the first time. My sympaties for the family and friends.

One of the quintessential LoS artists. Also the creator of Tellus.

I was always a fan of his Timber Wolf.

The cover of LSH #13 is one of my favorite Legion covers -- and probably my favorite Lightle cover. God bless the person who made the logo clear for that issue -- because it really made the cover and Timber Wolf pop. I gather that Lightle was a very slow artist (as was Cockrum back in the 70s), so that probably prevented him from becoming a big name in the biz.

I did like his work on Doom Patrol as well. Replacing him with Erik Larsen -- who was really a newb at the time -- wasn't the best choice, IMHO.

He drew my favorite Timber Wolf, all lean and mean, and his work on Tellus was amazing, the first truly non-humanoid member of the classic Legion (well, apart from Cham, who usually presents as an orange humanoid). His lines were so clean, he really captured the 'clean-cut' vibe that the Legion had back in their early days, and yet he was also the first artist I remember who gave different characters distinctive faces and builds, and you could tell his buffer Colossal Boy or Ultra Boy from his leaner Timber Wolf or Mon-El even without just relying on their costume/haircut.

I wish he'd gotten more time, both on the book and in this world.

I saw this yesterday. An amazingly talented artist!
While he's best known for his Legion work, I loved his stuff on the Flash.
