And now he lives in the family manse on the moon. Tough dystopian life.

He's also rich as hell from cheating at the stock market and making investments in the past that he knew would pan out (the ultimate insider trader; only Xavier is possibly worse in this regard), and has luxurious safe houses all over the world in places like the Swiss Alps. Again, he's like Batman with upgrades.

Almost forgot about that. Cable is fancy as hell. Definitely feels like Duggan could be exploring more of these aspects of his character, and his shady dealings in the 20th Century. Perhaps when the OG returns...

His backstory is literally about him growing up in a rebellion. He was training, fighting and involved on the battle scene in the future before he made it to present day 616

He was a little coddled until Redd and Slym left and stopped their "helicopter parenting" ways. Clearly.

I mean, Kid Cable crying and calling mommy and daddy during the X of Swords event!? Pitiful.

He was a freedom fighter, even in his youth. Slim (Scott) and Red (Jean) trained him to be a warrior and survive in the future. Mother Askani's spirit form guided him to lead the Askani after her death. Young Cable was one of the leaders of the resistance against Stryfe's new order after the death of Apocalypse.

But he still wasn’t in an actual military branch, so he might not be one in the traditional sense of the word

He may be seen as a soldier but I don't think he is one officially as in belonging to an legit army though being trained in fighting.

Is the Ivy League law degree real?

    Define "actual military branch".
    "Cable was right!"

Yes. I think it was in one of his early New Mutants or X-Force appearances that this was said by Cable himself. But I can’t fully recall.

    Define "actual military branch".
We know from his earliest New Mutants appearances that he was considered a legend in military circles. Whether that’s from active service or just his mercenary work for the military/Dept of Defense is never clarified. But he’s a freedom fighter who fought for decades in a future war, and has been a “solider of fortune” (mercenary) for years in the modern era before hooking up with the New Mutants and the X-men. I’d say that qualifies as a soldier, but I suppose it depends on your definition. If you narrowly define it as having to be a member of a military unit in service of a legitimately recognized nation-state or something like that, then maybe he doesn’t meet that standard. But, as mentioned, he fought a prolonged war in the future against the New Canaanites as part of the Clan Chosen rebel army (or militia, whatever you want to call it). Plus his present day military activities. Whether that makes him a “soldier” in your mind or just a highly trained, highly experienced “warrior”; it really starts to feel like semantics. At least to me.

He grew up thousands of years in the future. Government and military structure changed and werent traditional when looking at it through the lens of someone being raised in the 20/21st century. He was a soldier; just not how you view it based on what we have in our world today.

Yep. Always thought of Cable as a partisan.

Can't really say that, since as it has been pointed out, odds are the military structure in the future he grew up in most likely bears no relationship to the one of the present he's living in.
